We had the good fortune of connecting with MarQuita Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi MarQuita, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
There were a couple of factors. I wanted to find something at the time, that would allow me to stay at home with my then one year old son. Daycare was so expensive, and due to me not having a reliable babysitter, it caused me to lose my job that I had. On top of that, I was working so much before getting fired, that I wasn’t getting home until super late and I wasn’t getting to really spend time with my son.

Outside of that, it was extremely harder, in my opinion to find makeup suitable for a woman of color, or makeup that wasn’t too expensive. All of this lead to me wanting to start my own brand so that I could help solve the problem I was having and hopefully many other women.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Klarity Kosmetics is ran by me, with the help of my 3 person team. All of my products are made in house, with all of my formulas being created by me as well. I taught myself how to make all of my products. All of my products are also vegan and cruelty free.

It has definitely been hard over the course of the years. I feel that as a black business owner, I’ve had to work way hard to prove myself. There have definitely been a lot of sleepless nights, not knowing if I would get enough sales some months, to now having a business overflow. I’ve learned how to deal with customers, what policies need to be put in place, how to process payroll, and so much more. I’m also still learning daily anytime something new comes my way.

I’d want the world to know that Klarity Kosmetics means the world to me. I see a little black girl that grew up without a lot and overcame so many struggles to get where I am. I literally lose out on sleep and spending quality time with my family at odd hours to make sure that business is taken care of, and that everything is in place for my customers. Even when I’m home, my mind is always working lol. I can wake up in the middle of the night with some type of vision or product I want to bring to life, and I’m going to stay awake until I get it all written down.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Honestly, I am a total stay at home person and unless it’s date night with my fiance I really don’t go anywhere locally. However, he is my BEST FRIEND, and typically if we want to do a week long trip, our favorite places to visit are Mexico and Puerto Rico.

I love swimming with the dolphins so that’s a must when we go to Mexico lol.

Our next trip will definitely be to Jamaica, so that we can go parasailing.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wouldn’t be anywhere without my family, especially my fiance Jamaal Palmer. He has pushed me in so many ways when it comes to business, but has also allowed me to be myself and grow into the business woman I am today.

My mom has been super amazing when it comes to helping me with my children so that I can work as long as I may need too, especially during the busy seasons.
