We had the good fortune of connecting with Marsha Bygrave and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marsha, we’d love to hear about a book that’s had an impact on you.
I read two books, I know the question said a book but, I read Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiosake and Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey and they both changed my mindset which has seen me making serious life changes both personally and professionally. I now seek professional advice from the right people and I have been working to ensure my money works for me for exactly what I need it to. I have a budget for my household and a budget for the business. This is all thanks to these two books.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a Cosmetologist and Barber licensed in the state of Florida. I am also a Certified Sisterlocks™️ Consultant. I have other qualifications under my belt, all of which have helped to mold me into the person I am today. I most proud of the fact that I stayed the course and I have gotten to where I am now. Today. I believe that what sets me apart is that I am me. I am honest with my clients and I serve them the way I’d want to be served. I got to where I am today because I believe I have always wanted to do something for a living that doesn’t feel like work, I wanted my “job” to be fun and rewarding and fulfilling. To that end, I thought about working in radio and pursued that in my country of birth and when I moved here, I ended up on this path. It’s all coincidental, but I’m happy for each step that got me here today. It hasn’t been easy, life in every aspect has its many challenges but I welcome each and everyone because it tests you and molds and shapes you for the next round. One of the greatest challenges when doing any job that involves people is dealing with said people and their varying personalities. People approach businesses with the consensus that “the customer is always right”. I have always disagreed with that statement because of the simple fact that people are flawed by design and wanting something or feeling entitled to something and using the excuse that you’re spending your money doesn’t equate to said person being right about a thought or opinion on how your business should be run or operated. Mind you, suggestions are always welcome, but anything else (aka nasty behavior or rudeness, etc.) will not be tolerated. These are things you have to get across to people when they contact or interact with your business and it can’t be daunting at times. That’s where having a strong support system comes into play. My circle, small as it is, helps me to navigate the turbulence I encounter from time to time and they’ve helped me to learn and decipher the various lessons I’ve learned up to now. Lessons and reminders like; -you cannot please everyone
-you need to have boundaries and limits (in all things and with all people)
-when in this field, you are the office furniture so you have to exercise care and caution and practice self care like you never have before.
My brand, my business is my baby. I tell people all the time, I love and treat my business like it’s my baby and believe me when I say giving birth was not easy and nurturing and raising it is a task but one I wouldn’t trade for anything. Like any good parent would, I will fervently work to build and protect my business and brand so I can watch it grow and be all that it can and then some.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m what most would identify as vegan and to that end, I have had to find meatless dining to enjoy an evening out with friends or associates. So the following are some places that I have come to love and or appreciate over the years:
-Icetasy Italian Ice (located in Cooper City,Fl.) for some of the best Italian Ice I’ve ever had. So many flavors to choose from and vegan options are available too
-The Rabbit Hole – Elevated Vegan Comfort Cuisine (located on East Atlantic Blvd in Pompano Beach) their food is amazing and for anyone who loves consistency where the food is concerned this place will not disappoint. Presentation and quality is everything.
-Orange Theory Fitness (Coral Springs’ South) I love this fitness studio because there’s no judgment and the music you work out to is amazing and gets you going during that cardio session. The coaches are phenomenal and I always invite my clients and friends to take a class with me
-Painting with Twist is always a great way to relax and express your artistic side while meeting new people
-Planta (they currently have two locations south beach and west Palm beach) it is amazing food and everything is plant based. I would love to take people there all the time
-Monster Mini Golf
To name a few. These are a few things that I absolutely enjoy
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I believe that the following individuals deserve a little credit for the encouragement and support, the advice and so much more that has seen me to this point of my journey. Adam Myers
Laudicena Ribeiro
Novlet Roye
Tamica Daley
Nicola Brown
These people have been there since day one of the birth of my business and before. My biggest supporters and advisers and so much more. I would probably have been working part time for someone else had it not been for Lau and my family encouraged and guided me down this path and reminded me to rely on God and to never give up
