We had the good fortune of connecting with Martin Litwak and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Martin, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I first decided to focus my practice in servicing “private clients” because I realized that major law firms around the globe were concentrating too much in advising corporations, without paying too much attention to the needs of the families that owed them. I saw very often how partners at these firms, and even senior associates, prioritized legal work to be done for the benefit of the companies while allocating junior lawyers or even paralegals to assist the owners of these companies with their own legal needs (divorces, succession planning, personal tax liabilities, new ventures, purchase of art, etc.). The main reasons for this to happen were the way these firms charge their professional fees and also the lack of training of their lawyers to understand the real needs of this special type of client. These were also the reasons why I decided for my company to charge fixed fees, or even an annual membership, and almost never calculate them in reference to the time spent on a matter.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We have built up or practice around the needs of the very specific clients we serve: private clients and sports and entertainers. We understand what they need and we try to incorporate more and more services to our offering so that we can sort out most of these needs. Our limit is the provision of financial advice, which is something we will never do. Other than that, we established a unique type of organization which we decided to call Legal Family Office. Even though our core services are strategic legal advice in the fields of wealth preservation, estate planning and international taxation and the provision of trust services, we are a rather innovative outfit and we are almost thinking of which additional services we can provide to our clients.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Fortunately, there are many places to visit, many things to do and amazing restaurants in Miami. Starting from the eating experience, I would take him/her to a good Argentinean restaurante (La Cabrera, Los Fuegos, Novecento or Baires Grill), to one of the trendy restaurants in the waterfront area (probably Seaspice), to Nusr-Et Steakhouse (always a wonderful experience) and to Makoto (the best sushi and Japanese in town). In terms of sightseeing, my favorites areas are the Art District, Wynwood and Lincoln Road, but we can visit Palm Beach, which is not far away and it is very nice as well. Finally, there are always good shows and sports events in Miami, so I am sure that we could catch some interesting to see.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
It would be absolutely unfair to give credit to a specific organization or person. Whatever degree of success I personally have is a consequence of what I learned from many people, including most of my previous bosses (not all of them of course), my colleagues at Untitled and all of our clients.
