We had the good fortune of connecting with Maryann Walsh, RD and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maryann, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
When I finally hit my stride with my career a few years ago I definitely held the mindset that there is no such thing as true work life balance and that I needed to take every opportunity that came my way even if it meant working all weekend and evenings on top of a normal 9-5 work schedule. Once I felt like I had more confidence in my abilities and a belief that there is an abundance of opportunities after laying the groundwork for so long, I decided it was OK to actually pursue more of a balance. I am currently almost 6 months pregnant and I am learning very quickly that if I don’t make time to create balance, my body and my mind basically force me to. It’s so important to take care of your physical and mental well-being because at the end of the day if you are burnt out and miserable, more money in the bank or a nicer car in the driveway isn’t going to make you feel any better!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

I have been a registered dietitian by trade for almost 10 years, and all throughout my early years and education I knew I had this creative side that wasn’t going to do well fitting into certain roles such as those which are heavily clinical. Additionally, I have always been better suited in environments that don’t force me into a certain schedule as my brain performs its best at all different times of day, so having a little bit of freedom with time has always been important to me. I think it’s important to find what makes the most sense for your strengths and your aptitudes and to not feel like you need to stay in one place if it isn’t serving you.
I think it’s important to be ok with not being like everyone else as there is always more than 1 way to be successful in whatever field you are in. I know many dietitians who are absolutely crushing it right now on social media, but realistically, despite being a creative person, I have introvert tendencies, so to always feel like I need to “show up” on social media just wouldn’t be a good fit for me in this season of my life. Consulting for businesses and helping them with the creative aspects of things as well as the messaging and product and program development that end up reaching the consumer, that has grown to be something I truly love.
I want the world to know that any success I have had so far has come from asking myself “why not me?” when it comes to opportunities. I didn’t grow up in a family of entrepreneurs/ executives/ business owners, so I had to seek opportunities to learn from people who were able to ask themselves that question regularly “why not me?” as they moved forward in their business/ careers and achieved success.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I have been in South Florida for 7 years now, and while I still feel like a newbie at times I have been able to see and experience some great things here! I would definitely make sure to spend a couple of days in Miami, perhaps a stay at the Faena Hotel and then a relaxing beach day, followed by a visit to the Ocean Drive strip! The Frost Museum of Science would be next on our itinerary. I’d then take them up north a bit to the Palm Beaches and we’d have lunch or dinner in Jupiter at one of the restaurants along Love Street and then stay a few nights at the historic Breakers on Palm Beach for more relaxation and beach time and we’d definitely enjoy some of the amazing restaurants on Worth Ave.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a shoutout to the people in my life who didn’t sugarcoat things for me or enable me, those are the people who helped me grow, even though I didn’t want to hear certain things at certain times. There are all types of interactions that will happen between you and friends, family and colleagues. Some negativity comes about by people being jealous or fearful of watching you grow while they stay the same, some positivity comes in the form of people wanting to cheer you on no matter what you do, sort of like “everybody gets a trophy!” type of people, and there’s nothing wrong with that, but beware of becoming complacent if you surround yourself with too many people who fall into that category. The people in your life who can be brutally honest with you while coming from a loving and caring place, those are truly the ones that can help you grow, personally (in love and relationships, etc.) and professionally (in career and overall self-actualization).
