We had the good fortune of connecting with Matt Hopkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Matt, what principle do you value most?
Over give and over deliver. No matter what your profession, if you are fortunate enough to be able to make a living doing what you love, then you owe it to the industry and to your clients to provide the ultimate in service and value. The most impactful differentiator is never knowledge, it’s service. As a life-long fitness professional, coach and entrepreneur I know more than anyone the importance of over delivering and over giving. There comes a time in everyone’s journey when the necessity for money blurs the line of servitude and ego is usually driving that car.

Especially when starting a business, the maxim has to be GIVE. If you have genuine conversations and display passion in every aspect of your business, you will undoubtedly have raving fans. Let the fans of your business carry your torch and deliver your message to the world. You will never have to spend a dollar on marketing.

If you are confident in your solution, then you will never have to worry about money. Focus wholeheartedly on the client and provide unparalleled service and the money will come.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The quest for health and vitality can be frustrating. Information is shaped by agenda and access to effective tools is costly and in many instances, unavailable. Our mission is to provide clarity, convenience and a root-cause approach to health and healing. We educate our community and strive to make access to our powerful strategies and protocols available to anyone trying to optimize their quality of life.

If you look at all disease and chronic illness through the lens of Functional Medicine, there are about ten buckets from which all diseases stem. Our non-invasive and easy-to-use therapies target these buckets and radically improve physical, cellular and mental health. In essence, we can “hack” the natural aging and disease process and provide the body with the raw materials to do what it does best–heal itself.

When we started this journey, we were unsure of just how broad the scope of treatments would be. Initially, physical recovery, pain management, inflammation, hormone balance and anti-aging benefits were obvious, but we are so excited to discover that these therapies could help so many people manage a wide variety of issues. Improvements in blood pressure, chronic pain, heart disease, brain health, anxiety, autoimmune diseases and even cancer treatment and prevention are just a few of the incredible stories our members are telling.

I have been a Functional Therapist and Holistic Nutritionist for over 20 years. I specialize in pain-management and posture/mobility. As my skills as a practitioner evolved and my experience grew, I began to notice that client and patient needs were changing. Chronic pain and severe inflammation were glaring limiting factors in most patient histories. It caused me to do a deep-dive on cellular health and how to effectively stop inflammaging–which is a fairly new term that denotes the destructive impact that chronic inflammation has systemically in the body. I began researching and seeking out alternative therapies that targeted mitochondrial health, microbiome function, cellular optimization, energy, sleep, lymphatic health, etc. It became overwhelmingly obvious to me that there was a need in the health and wellness industry for a shift in thinking and a radical change in how we treat and manage chronic conditions. Biohacking is an area of the industry that is rapidly gaining popularity and awareness. Biohacking is when you utilize technology and advancements in nutrition science to circumvent the natural hallmarks of aging and disease. In effect, one can “hack” the body to beat and treat previously unbeatable conditions and transform quality of life. Traditional medicine lags in the area of root-cause health care and drastically overemphasizes symptom treatment and markedly underprioritizes the impact that nutrition, environment, relationships, thoughts and sleep play in overall health. Healthspan Recovery focuses on optimizing cellular health which has many downstream benefits to mood, energy, sleep, hormones, pain and bodily system functions.

We want the world to know that we understand how frustrating the journey to health can be. The system is rigged and the deck is stacked against us. Fortunately, there has never been a better time in history to turn the tables on traditional health care and take back our vitality. Alternative and holistic therapies that actually move the needle on improving health and quality of life are moving to the front lines. There have been a few times in history when therapies like ours have reared their head in the public’s eye, but power forces with agendas and ulterior motives stifled the movement. I think this is finally the moment in history where information, access and awareness will support the shift and open the door for a new way of looking at health and wellness.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’ve been a city boy my whole-life, growing up in Chicago and living in Boston. When I first moved to Miami 12 years ago the city was just being born. I have always lived in Brickell because it resembled most closely to the hustle and bustle that I was used to… but it had a ways to go. Fast forward to now, Brickell is an unrecognizable place. Comparatively, there isn’t another city in the US that has the shine and feel to Miami. When my friends and family come, I like to highlight all the different parts of the city while emphasizing the original tenants that made it home to me. There are a lot of overrated “be-seen” places that detour from the charm that hides in the right places.

The first place on the first day has to be the Rusty Pelican–especially if you’ve never been to Miami. A drink on the outside terrace at sunset, or even the just at the bar, is the perfect vantage point. It outlines the skyline and marries marina and water with the city. And it’s a pretty drive over the bridge from Brickell.

Dinner is a toss-up… either iL Gabbiano or Toscana Davino if you’re staying in Brickell, or venture to the Gables to Zucca or Fiola for the best Italian around. After dinner, take a short walk up South Miami Ave to Empire Social Cigar Lounge (if that’s your thing) and enjoy the biggest humidor in Miami along with a fantastic Bourbon, Scotch and Brandy list.

You can’t experience Miami without being on the water. A really cool (and affordable) way to do this is to take advantage of the water taxi. A favorite excursion is Bokampers or Shooters in Fort Lauderdale. Not only are they a great place to catch the game, but the intercoastal is a beautiful backdrop as the sun starts to set. Jump on the water taxi and ride to the 14th street fisheries. You can feed the Tarpon right in the marina and catch some great live music.

South Beach can be a hasstle, but a trip to South Pointe is a must before the trip ends. Smith & Wollensky’s is the spot. It’s classically consistent, and the ambiance is unbeatable. 4pm on Friday’s and you can watch the cruise ships leave the port. A lot of people will tell you that Joe’s is the spot for stone crabs–and don’t get me wrong, they are great. But Garcias or Casablanca on the river has amazing fish and seafood, and the boats and river vibes make for a much more scenic and relaxing experience.

I would like to thank my business partner, friend and Healthspan Recovery co-founder, Pablo Perez, for believing in and sharing my vision and for his endless support. We took a massive forward leap when the rest of the world was retreating. Intelligence, savvy, and know-how is one thing, but the confidence to take action is quite another–especially in uncharted waters. This is just the beginning my brother.
