We had the good fortune of connecting with Matt Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Matt, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When I considered freelancing as an illustrator, I knew it would be the best way to open myself up creatively. Working in fashion was comfortable in the sense of full-time, benefits and bonus’, but investing in my own work introduced me to the freelance space. It brings more risk but allows me to push myself and grow more. I went the Master’s route. I loved what I saw at the SVA Illustration as Visual Essay program and committed to learning and creating the most I could in that time. I came out with great work and opportunities to create for big clients.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am currently illustrating for clients in editorial, advertising and publishing, teaching at FIT and working on a group of paintings for a show. After seven years deep working in the fashion industry as a footwear designer. I had grown a lot creatively but knew I needed something different to reach my full potential as a creator. Once I made that decision I was able to explore illustration and art more fully and honestly. I established a style that allowed me to work with great clients and help tell stories, which has been really gratifying! I use bold colors and silhouettes in my work, and I’m always trying to make the viewer curious and draw them in.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would make sure they got a whole range of food from Dominican, West African, Jamaican, to Ramen, Indian, Southeast Asian, etc. We would bike, beach, subway and walking a lot. Some thrifting and some shopping, and every night a different nightlife experience.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My career change process effected everything in my life in such an emotional way! I couldn’t have done it without the support of my family and encouragement of my friends and therapy. They allowed me to play the long game, planning what the transition would look like and to keep putting one foot in front of the other.
