We had the good fortune of connecting with Maureen Roxanny and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maureen, why did you pursue a creative career?
I pursued an artistic or creative career because I wanted to maintain my creative spirit alive. In a world where the daily grind of a 9-5 job can be draining, I yearned for a way to express myself and find fulfillment beyond the routine. While financial security is undoubtedly important, I refused to let go of my passion for creativity and self-expression. I didn’t want to lose touch with what makes me happy. Financial security matters, but so does doing what I love.
By embracing creativity and staying true to my artistic pursuits, I found a balance between financial stability and personal fulfillment.

As a freelance photographer, my work is primarily recognized within the local music scene, especially for my captures from the early 2000s, notably at the renowned venue, Churchills Pub. My photographs are a reflection of my unique perspective and appetite for storytelling. What sets me apart is my ability to capture moments that evoke emotion of nostalgia and I am hoping it resonates with viewers on a deeper level. I take pride in my ability to infuse creativity and authenticity into my work, whether I’m documenting live music performances, capturing daily life through street photography, or exploring cemeteries. I also take pride in what I have accomplished in only a short amount of time.
My journey to where I am today professionally has been a mix of dedication, perseverance, and continuous learning. I encountered numerous closed doors before finally finding an open opportunity. Despite the hurdles, I persisted and I have learned valuable lessons about the importance of PATIENCE, resilience, and staying true to my artistic vision and doing my best to silence the imposter syndrome.
What I want the world to know about me and my brand is that photography isn’t just a profession for me—it’s a way of life. In sharing my story, as cliche as it sounds – Don’t give up on your passions. Life’s challenges and distractions may steer you away from your goals, but it’s essential to stay grounded in what drives you. Find ways to make your mark on the world and your community, regardless of the obstacles. Don’t allow doubts about age or timing to hold you back on the life you truly want.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m a bit of a recluse at heart, secretly preferring the solitude of a house cat over too much human interaction. Yet, when I’m feeling social, I do enjoy immersing myself in the simple pleasures Miami has to offer, occasionally indulging in its tourist attractions.
You can kickstart your day with a coffee and light breakfast at either White Rose Coffee Shop or, for a more substantial meal, Coral Bagels, known for its consistently delicious bagel sandwiches.
If I’m up for the challenge of parallel parking, I might venture into the vibrant Wynwood Walls and Wynwood Art District, or explore the cultural delights of Little Havana, strolling down Calle Ocho and popping into Ball & Chain for live music and mojitos. Of course, a stop at Azucar for some delectable ice cream is a must, or I might opt for a serene afternoon at the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. Everglades National Park will always be a fun idea with its breathtaking landscapes and wildlife sightings, while Robert is Here in Homestead offers fresh produce for a healthy snack, along with milkshakes and boiled peanuts. Virginia Key or Matheson Hammock Park are the better choices for some peace and quiet but also a nice time under that Florida sun.
Miami’s scorching heat often drives me indoors, where I find comfort in the air-conditioned halls of the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), admiring at contemporary art against the backdrop of stunning waterfront views. A stop at Technique Records is never a bad idea and when in need of a quick bite, a Publix sub suits me just fine, though I never underestimate the allure of a hearty meal at Flannigan’s.
As night falls, I might embrace a bit of spontaneity with stage dives and Moscow mules at Gramps, possibly followed by some mischievous fun at The Corner for those who refuse to “call it a night.”
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
For a brief period, I paused my photography journey, mainly due to the common struggle with imposter syndrome that often plagues creative endeavors. However, during a trip to Los Angeles, I reunited with my longtime friend, Brittany Fontaine, a talented makeup/makeup FX artist for film and television. Her encouragement and support reignited my passion for photography. With Brittany’s empowering words and constant reminder that I was capable of achieving success, I achieved many of my goals within just a year. Without her push, I wouldn’t have reignited my pursuit of photography.
I also want to express my gratitude to Conor Barbato, the bassist of the band Devalued, who has consistently encouraged me to stay on this path and avoid succumbing to self-doubt. He has offered continous encouragement and positivity, ensuring that I stayed focused on my passion. He goes above and beyond to provide constructive feedback, offer advice, and cheer me on during both the highs and lows of my creative pursuit.
I am genuinely lucky and grateful to have these two by my side.
