We had the good fortune of connecting with Maxine Grosswald and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maxine, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
When I reflect on why I chose an artistic career, it’s clear it wasn’t a single decision but a culmination of life experiences, struggles, and moments of self-discovery. Growing up, I was told that pursuing art meant choosing a life of struggle. This belief pushed me toward more “practical” paths, leading to my AA in Business, BA in Psychology, and MSW in Social Work. I worked hard, thinking these degrees would pave the way to a stable career. But along the way, I realized that stability without passion felt hollow.

In every “practical” role I took, I felt confined. I wasn’t cut out for the monotony of 9-to-5 desk jobs. It became clear that I thrived in roles that were dynamic, interactive, and creative—spaces where I could express myself and connect with others. Art had always been a hobby I turned to for solace, but I never saw it as a viable career option until Whitney offered me a job at a paint and sip studio.

That job was transformative. Teaching art wasn’t just a job; it was a revelation. I discovered I had a knack for engaging people, explaining concepts, and creating environments where others could feel inspired. The owner of the studio became my mentor, showing me that being an artist didn’t have to mean struggling financially. I worked my way up to General Manager, running one of the studios and managing a team, all while continuing to teach and create art. It was the perfect blend of my organizational skills, teaching abilities, and creativity.

Choosing an artistic career wasn’t about rejecting other paths but about recognizing that art was the only space where I could integrate all aspects of myself. It wasn’t just about creating—it was about problem-solving, collaborating, and inspiring others. Through each experience, I learned that success isn’t about fitting into a societal mold but about building a life that aligns with who you are. Choosing art meant choosing a career where I could thrive, where my passion became my profession, and where I didn’t have to compromise my happiness to succeed.

What should our readers know about your business?
Cherished Rain Art is a live wedding and event painting business that Whitney started and is focused on creating personalized, meaningful artwork that tells and celebrates life’s special moments.

Getting to this point wasn’t easy—breaking into the market and building a brand takes time and effort. We overcame challenges by staying authentic, focusing on our strengths, and listening to our clients’ needs. Along the way, I’ve learned the importance of perseverance, adaptability, and community.

At Cherished Rain Art, we aim to create more than just beautiful art; we create pieces that hold meaning and make lasting impressions. Whether you want to capture a memory or celebrate a milestone, we’re here to bring your vision to life.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
As a Miami native, I absolutely love when people come to visit! That said, I’m a bit of a homebody, mainly because all the travel I do for work leaves me pretty wiped. Since I work gigs, weekends are usually a no-go for me, so I spend most of my downtime exploring on Mondays and Thursdays—perfect for avoiding the crowds!

I’m not big on South Beach (too much chaos), but if you’re looking for a beach day, head north! North Beach and beyond offer a much more relaxed vibe. If you’re up for a day of eating and art, Las Olas is a personal favorite—it’s packed with great spots to explore. Wynwood isn’t where I spend most of my time, but Dear Eleanor is an awesome community space I love showing off. And if you’re wandering Wynwood, go during happy hour—it’s quieter, and the vibe is perfect for soaking in the art. I also really enjoy the Frost and PAMM which is in Biscayne and always a fun full day for out of town people.

I’m also a big fan of the outdoors, and Oleta River State Park is a must-visit for nature lovers. It has everything—kayaking, biking, hiking, and even spots to just chill. It’s the ultimate playground for anyone who loves the fresh air!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to Whitney Yomam, who has been a pivotal figure in my journey. Not only is she my best friend, but she’s also been a mentor to me in both art and business. Whitney’s talent, drive, and generosity have inspired me every step of the way. She saw potential in me when I didn’t see it in myself and gave me opportunities that transformed my career and my perspective on what’s possible. Her creativity is boundless, and her kindness is unmatched.

If you haven’t already, do yourself a favor and check her out on social media @whitneypaigeart! She’s a beyond-talented human being whose work speaks volumes. Whitney, thank you for always believing in me and for being such a vital part of my story. I wouldn’t be where I am without you!
