We had the good fortune of connecting with Meagan Maldonado and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Meagan, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Being true to myself and my brand. Being able to say no to opportunities that do not align with me. Everything I create is special and personal and I want that to always be reflected in what I do. The way I create, communicate, and who I align myself with in business is most important.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Right now, I mainly focus on balloon art. My installations are one of a kind- at that is why i love creating organic balloon art. I prioritize creativity and special touches and I think that is what sets me apart. I also love using other mediums in my balloons: florals, fringe, card stock inserts, etc. I’m most excited for this upcoming summer season because my installations are bigger and I am choosing projects where I have more creative control.

Getting here wasn’t easy. I did it on the side for over 5 years but it took a very long time to feel confident enough to do it full time. The risk of not having a steady income in a time where there was so much unknown was very scary. At the same time, I learned there was never going to be a better time because even the most “secure” jobs were not safe during a pandemic. There are plenty of challenges with being any kind’ve entrepreneur, but what is most difficult is the balance of staying creative while managing a business and the focus to do both well. I have had to learn to be efficient, time manage effectively, and be patient. Perseverance is the name of the game.

When it comes to my brand and story- I want the world to know that its more then just pretty party stuff. My goal is to use everything I know and learn to help pave the way for other creatives. Outside of creating, I am very passionate about supporting other small business and helping them learn how to scale successfully. Being a creative at heart, I know that the “business” side can feel like a lot to understand and handle and I want to help bridge that gap.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m a sucker for good food and music- especially brunch. If you’re visiting me we are going to go eat in the West Loop (Chicago), go by the river walk if its nice out, and then head to Logan Square for good music, drinks, and more food. It’s not about specific places but about specific parts of the city.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First my mother because she has always been my biggest supporter. She gives the most sound business advice and helps with my daughter when I work. I wouldn’t have been able to do this full time without her.

Second, the women ran cohort that I am currently in for helping me get organized and giving me the tools to scale. Get Sh!t Done is AMAZING.
