We had the good fortune of connecting with Melissa Mills and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Melissa, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Here’s the crazy part, I never really planned to start a business. It kind of just fell in my lap, so I went with it because of how effortless it came to me. I was already doing photoshoots for myself, coming up with concepts, and pretty much directing them. When I started to post my pictures on my socials, to my surprise, people were impressed and started calling me a creator and saying I was creative. I just thought I was vain and loved seeing pictures of myself lol. But as time went by, people started to inquire on wanting to take their brand or their socials to the next level and wanted my help with it. In the beginning, I wasn’t getting paid a dime for it, nor did it ever cross my mind to collect a check for it, because of how much joy it brought me. So for a while, I was working and not being compensated up until someone sat me down and drilled in me that my work had value, and was worth being paid for. And that’s how the business started.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Being a creative director/content creator isn’t easy. It’s more than just really cool photoshoots and visuals. It all starts with your imagination. This is such a crazy thing to say, but daydreaming has really saved my life. I daydream a lot, like tap out and go into another realm. And I believe that’s what makes creating come so effortless to me. My mind is always on vacation, taking creative trips lol. I used to often doubt myself, doubt my talent, my thought process, and even the calling I know God has over my life. And if I can be honest, at times I still have those doubts. But what snaps me back to reality is my art. I take a look at it, and I’m instantly remined that I am talented, I am creative, I am meant to do this cause I’m good at it. I want people to always be inspired by my work, I want to always paint a story in their minds when they see my visuals. I want them to tap into a different realm like I did whenever my art is presented.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in sunny Miami, Fl, there is always something to do here. Whether it’s a restaurant, the beach, a museum, a lounge or club, we’re literally open 24/7 for your pleasure and convenience lol. A week of fun for me would probably look like A nice day on a yacht, riding jet skis, with music, wine, lunch and dinner. A trip to my favorite restaurant Komodo’s, then head to their small lounge to dance all night. Maybe visit a museum, do brunch.. the options are endless in Miami lol
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are so many people that has and continue to support me throughout this process. My family and friends have always been rooting for me in everything that I wanted to pursue. But if I had to give a special and/or particular shoutout to anyone, it would definitely be my cousin Patrick Berrouet. It was him that invested in me and brought me my first laptop that got me into blogging, that eventually turned into me creatively directing. I genuinely believe that if he had never gotten me that laptop, I would have never pursued any of the things that I’m interested in now. He saw my love for writing, he saw how passionate and creative my imagination was, and he poured into me. That’s when I really started to take writing and creating serious.
