We had the good fortune of connecting with Micaela Valdez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Micaela, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I wanted to make a difference in waxing services , considering many clients have had bad experiences when it comes to the removal of the hairs. I wanted them to experience a treatment that’s different in which they could be understood and where the prices for waxing would be much more tolerable.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
What sets my business apart from others is the fact I use a 100% organic product that comes from 1900 A.C and was used by Persians. This form of wax is much more known now in America in todays time because people want to use more natural products . I am very proud of my business since I’m able to project who I am through it. I’ve been an esthetician for more than 30 years. I first started learning about waxing through a friend of my mother, from there I grew and started learning to work in waxing. This is something I discovered I have a passion for. Someone later then told me “why don’t you open your own hard wax business”, I tried it and but then failed after a couple months. I then discovered sugar waxing and decided to open up the business again. I had someone tell me it will never go well for me because of the location my business was in. Since I had already rented a spot in a three floor building I was feeling a little disappointed in myself for not knowing how to start but, if there’s something that characterizes me is to never give up and that’s what I did. When I first started I didn’t have many clients. Months had gone by and I would have only one or two clients a day , which was difficult for me considering I had to pay rent plus my business rent. I didn’t have enough money for gas so I would walk from my apartment to the business which was more than 20 blocks away and then walk back home everyday. I didn’t know anything about marketing so I paid an agency to help build cliental but I didn’t end up having any clients so that ended up not even helping me out. I decided to build up my own website by myself using ‘Square Up’ . The webpage ‘Square Up’ was only being used at the time by restaurants so when I started using it for beauty the company actually reached out to me asking me how I did it. In todays time I still use ‘Square Up’ and I’m still learning more each day. Id like others to know that I am an immigrant women and that on my own I was able to build my own business.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Let say my best friend is visiting the area for a week long trip , I would most definitely take her to South Beach. South Beach has many enjoyable spots to eat, drink or to simply take a walk and admire the view. My favorite spot to eat and drink at in South Beach would be a restaurant called ‘Nikki Beach’. Nikki Beach has the most delicious seafood Miami has to offer. This restaurants menu even inputs information regarding nuts ,gluten, dairy etc. to advise those allergic to certain foods. Nikki Beach even has an amazing view to relax or take pictures for memories. Not only does South Beach have this restaurant and many others, you can also sit back and relax in the sun at the beach as a hang out spot.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I liked to dedicate my shoutout to my parents Zoilo and Delia, thanks to them I am the person I am today. My father always told me that I can go far. He would tell me I was very capable of what I was set out to do and that I would achieve it. My father was my mentor. The man that set out an example on work , to the dedication it takes to always do an efficient job and to be happy while doing so. Meanwhile, my mother taught me to always discover new things ,innovate and learn.
