We had the good fortune of connecting with Milagros Da Silva Goncalves and Clara Rodriguez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Milagros / Clara, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
We believe it was kind of a mix of fate and divine timing. Both of us had known each other for a while, but without mutual knowledge, we had bought the same materials to start playing around with them. However, we believe that besides from having the same idea, we were both lacking something we weren’t even aware of. A community, a union. It was when we realized both of us had the same concept and idea that there was only one way of doing it. This is not only because we wanted to express ourselves creative wise, but we were also looking for a place to feel emotional support, disconnection, and excitement. We wanted to create a safe place.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Genetica Avanzada is an argentinian owned, miami based slow fashion brand. We curate vintage pieces and transform them to give them a new life. What makes us more proud is that we started being two girls just wanting to do something fashion related with a lot of passion but not so much knowledge in the production area. Yet, our strong headed selves, wanted to create all these really detailed designs we were dreaming of. At first, we used to struggle with a lot of fear in not being able to make it possible because of our lack of resources. Then, we realized, that what seemed our most disadvantage at that time, was actually what was pushing us to do better and to find another way -our way-, of doing things. Every time we wanted to do something and couldn’t, it forced us to get out of our comfort zone to find a way to do it anyways. So in every piece there is a lot of personal accomplishment to get the piece to it’s final state. We want every piece to be unique so we are facing unknown materials and new challenges every single day. Every piece we made has had numerous hours of work and love involved. Even though this isn’t our first project individually, from having cero experience on painting, sewing, etc to having our label tags even made by ourselves, there is a long journey we are really proud of.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The day would probably start visiting Key Biscayne for some of the most peaceful beaches here, and then of to do some shopping at Magic City Flea, one of our favorites vintage markets in the area. Wynwood, to enjoy the cultural aspects of that part of the city and sunset at Southpoint. At night, we love to have a glass of wine at Lagniappe and listen to some live music. And to end the night properly, we visit Space. to dance a little bit.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Our friends that support us every time we are creating, just chilling with us while we work, help us on photoshoots, being our assistans, dj’s, photographers, models, and the best at hyping us up!
