We had the good fortune of connecting with Millennial Girls Podcast and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Millennial Girls, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Both being radio personalities in Miami, magic would happen when we would do things together, like getting featured in Billboard for our exclusive with Martin Garrix. We considered starting our own podcast on the side to “keep the dream alive”, so to speak, then the pandemic hit and we were let go from our jobs. We really had no other option but to create our own brand! With the podcast world booming, we felt this was the right place to keep ourselves relevant but also niche. Being a radio personality you are really only showing 20% of your “real” personality on-air. We knew this was a place to not take ourselves so seriously, and we wanted to be as real and relatable as possible. We’re both experienced in public speaking, Natasha is the master editor for all things video/audio/social, and Racquel is the Queen of PR. So what better partnership right? That’s how the Millennial Girls Podcast was born.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Racquel: I’ve always known I wanted to talk for a living! Since I was young, I watched TRL every weekday growing up and was infatuated with the VJ being the connection between a musician and their fans. I ended up going to college for Multimedia Journalism and began working as a Music Journalist senior year. I had launched my own YouTube channel which ultimately led me to gaining the role of Editor and Digital Correspondent for the online music publication Stage Right Secrets. I spent four years going back and forth between Nashville and South Florida covering events and talking to artists that I had only dreamed about. This on-camera experience brought me to becoming the In-Arena/Digital Host for the Florida Panthers which was one of the most exciting achievements of my career along with covering the Billboard Music Awards red carpet! Talking in front of 18,000 a night is unlike any experience you will ever have. I knew I wanted to get back into radio after the Panthers and was able to by being the Afternoon host on Revolution 93.5. I think all of this experience from working live events, my whole career sets me apart from others because when it’s live, you have to think fast on your feet and it trains your brain to be ready for anything. Of course there have been many challenges I’ve had to overcome. The most prominent one would be gender inequality and constantly having to prove myself to everyone and anyone. If you aren’t prepared for that it really will affect your mental health. Having a strong support system around you keeps you grounded and pushes you in the right direction. Keep the people close that want you to be happy and allow you to share your happiness with them. I want the world to know that our brand is something they can turn to when they need a pick me up or just a good laugh because being a millennial right now, or really ever, is not a walk in the park but we are here to share some unicorn glitter which will help you get through anything! Natasha: My background is in marketing and advertising. I was hired to manage the social media for Miami’s Dance Music radio station. A Co-Host spot opened up on the Morning Show and I got it! From there I was given the midday slot solo with Racquel following after me afternoons. A career in general is definitely not easy. From dealing with gender inequality, my age, my experience (or lack thereof) in all jobs I’ve taken on in my life, nothing was ever easy; especially because I want to be the best at whatever I do. The only way I overcame challenges was to look at myself first and improve myself, then address any issues with the person in charge, and ultimately if something led to unhappiness, then I’d find another job! My greatest accomplishment was when we were given the opportunity to interview Martin Garrix shortly before Ultra and Miami Music Week. Our goal was to get an exclusive and we did! I made sure to get this into the hands of as many publications as possible. The interview went viral on all EDM platforms including Billboard. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to stop looking at others and blame them or the business. Always look inward, address the problems, and find solutions. What I want people to take away from the Millennial Girls Podcast is to believe in yourself, BE YOURSELF, be persistent, be consistent, and work hard towards your goals because nothing comes easy.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If there wasn’t a global pandemic… we’d definitely take you to the 1 Hotel Beach club or Mondrian pool in South Beach to live our best lives. We’ll get a table at DAER Dayclub and drink all the White Claws in site. Racquel will take you to your first singer/songwriter concert at the Fillmore Miami Beach. We’ll walk through Brickell City Centre for lunch, but end up walking out with 100 shopping bags. Natasha will take you on a food tour of Miami: drinks at Swan, Komodo for sushi, Casa Tua for Italian, Lucali for pizza, Versailles for Cuban, Mandolin for Greek, and Sugar or Astra for the best view of Miami. We’ll bar hop through Wynwood and be your photographer so you can get the best content. And of course, have you be a guest on our Millennial Girls Podcast!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost, we’d like to give a shoutout to our listeners! Racquel would like to shoutout her parents and sister and Natasha her husband for their support. Without them there would be no podcast! And of course our interns who help us with SEO, social media, and outreach. We love you.
