Meet Mimika: Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Mimika and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mimika, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
For me, the most important factor behind success comes with the feeling you create for the people around you. In everything I’ve done as an artist, songwriter and musician it’s always been the top priority for me to work with good people, and to make the people around me feel appreciated, safe and happy. Making that the number one priority has opened up the door to so many opportunities for me in the music industry and continues to reward me because people will never forget how you make them feel. At the end of the day it’s all about the environment you create around you because regardless of money or numbers it’s only worth it if you’re happy and are experiencing it with people you care about!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve always said that before anything else, I’m a songwriter and a storyteller and I think that’s what sets me apart in my music. I love crafting my songs in ways that tell the story of my life and the people closest to me and developing that skill over the years is one of the things I’m proudest of! Getting to where I am today took a lot of time and work. I started writing songs when I was 12 and started working with producers and other writers when I was 15. I didn’t actually have my first real release until 2019 though and by that point, I’d had the time to develop my voice and sense of who I wanted to be as an artist (even though, honestly, I’m still figuring it out, aren’t we all?) I started studying at Berklee College of music in 2018 as a songwriting major and that’s been one of my biggest blessings and challenges for sure. I was self-taught until I started at Berklee, in literally every way. Voice, piano, writing, it was all just whatever I’d picked up over the years from the people I crossed paths with but, never any serious training and so it was a huge and welcomed adjustment for my life to become flooded with theory and practical music training. I think the most important thing I’ve learned though, is how to work with people, with many different personalities, with different creative styles and processes. I’ve gotten to learn about people and that’s one of my favorite takeaways from being in music- aside from the music itself. In terms of what I want people to know about me and my story, I just want people to know that my music is honest and real, even when I craft it in pretty but abstract lyrics. I’m just telling the stories of my life and my experiences and hoping to find other people along the way who feel the same way and we can all just feel it together.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oooo, where to start! I would definitely take them on some kind of outdoor adventure, since it’s winter I’d say snowboarding or skiing, maybe tubing if we’re feeling a bit lazier, and then hang out at a chalet for the night! We’d also spend some time in the city, walking around Queens Quay, the city is beautiful in the winter. We’d hit my favourite Thai restaurant in Liberty Village and hang out at one of the bars on Queen. We could visit all the stores on Queen West, which is one of my favorite places to shop, and maybe end the whole trip with a visit to the drive-in. That’s one of my friends’ and I favorite thing to do, just all go pile into one car and hang out together watching literally any movie that’s playing, we just like spending time together. So, that would be the perfect end to the week!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d love to dedicate my shoutout to my mom for her endless support- even when I gave her a heart attack by telling her I was dropping out of university for music- and my friends for their constant love and positivity!
