We had the good fortune of connecting with Moabit and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Moabit, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My primary motivation behind starting my own business was to have more control over my work and its distribution. Street art is often seen as a form of rebellion against the traditional art world, but I wanted to take it a step further by creating a sustainable career out of my passion. I saw starting my own business as an opportunity to showcase my work on my own terms, build my brand, and connect with a wider audience. Ultimately, I wanted to turn my designs into a legitimate source of income, while still maintaining its underground appeal. As a painter specialising in satirical paintings and street murals, I have a background of modest beginnings. My aim is to depict current events through my pieces. Despite my aspirations, I maintain a humble attitude and prioritise creative independence through running my own business, instead of relying on traditional galleries or employers.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m from a small town and my background and upbringing have had a big impact on who I am today. Growing up in a tight-knit community where everyone supports each other has taught me the importance of being kind and supportive of others, and it’s something that I try to bring into all aspects of my life. My upbringing helped me to gain knowledge about the dangers and it thought me how to safeguard what we value, as well as experiencing the joy and learning how to cherish it. I believe that my unwavering willingness to take risks and consistently challenge myself is the driving force behind my success and that of my brand. I am continuously seeking innovative ways to showcase my ideas to the world. Whether it’s through traveling to various countries to paint street murals or spending time in my studio working on my current projects, I am dedicated to transforming ordinary substances into something meaningful and impactful.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Every day is a precious gift and I plan to treat it as such! I consider myself fortunate, and I attribute that to the city I reside in and the circle friends who surround me. The place I call home is brimming with opportunities, as well as the people who inhabit it. Creatives of all kinds surround me, providing an inspiring and lively environment. I have access to local and private events with friends, some of whom are talented musicians, young professionals and just fun to hang out with. If my best buddy comes over to visit me I’ll give each day the space and time it needs to unfold naturally, but when we do venture out, I’ll show him my favorite streets and go on grand hikes in the area before spinning yarns over drinks. I would probably take him to check out some of the the city’s famous graffiti alleys ,have brunch at the local street food market to sample authentic cuisine and take him to a night-out acoustic music jam sesh. It’s all about finding joy in the journey!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am enamoured with the tags and the chaotic abstract designs adorning the walls of the streets. I would like to give a shoutout to the early pioneers of the street art movement who took a bold stance and brought attention to this art form. Their creativity, passion and dedication inspired me to pursue street art as a career and made it possible for people like me to make a living from it. I would also like to thank the street art community and its supporters, including galleries, collectors, and fans, who continue to help promote and preserve the spirit of street art. Without their support, street art may never have evolved into the globally recognised and respected form of art that it is today.
