We had the good fortune of connecting with Molly Morrison and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Molly, what role has risk played in your life or career?

I’ve treated risk as an investment, I think you have to more to lose if you don’t learn to put yourself in uncomfortable situations. My fear of not doing something as an artist has typically outweighed fear of the risk itself. It’s been the best way to get to know myself, moving to Chicago when I was 18 and somewhat suddenly out to LA in 2020. And in my career, I’ve tried to embrace that taking risk is part of trusting yourself creatively. The outcomes teach you, whatever happens. When I started freelancing two years ago, I noticed how much of my creativity was untapped in the comfort zone of jobs I had the first few years out of college. That’s motivated me to keep tasking risks.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

I’m a film photographer and graphic designer. I do a mix of digital and social media marketing for my clients but as an artist, I lean more torwards mechanical and handmade work. I love that film doesn’t offer instant gratification, that feels increasingly sacred in the landscape we live in. Most days I’m juggling 2-3 clients that need a mix of social media/blog content or photoshoot production assistance. One of the cool things about being in LA is you can try your hand in a lot of creative spaces. Being an extra, working in production, that’s helped me meet people and book creative work which balances out the handful of virtual clients I work with. I’m proud of the progress I’ve made in the short time I’ve been here, seeing my work improve and collaborating with other artists has been rewarding. I have a lot of goals ahead of me, I’m not in a place to celebrate where I am yet, but I am proud of the work I’ve done so far.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

I live in Long Beach which is home to an abyss of vintage, thrift, and book stores that are fun to walk through and browse. If a homie’s in town, we’ll definitely hit Long Beach Antique Mall, Goods On Orange, and Page Against The Machine. Grab coffee at Wood Coffee Co. and walk the boardwalk between Rosie’s Dog Beach and downtown. Must eats: La Chancla, A&J’s Seafood Shack, Little Coyote, and the poke bowl at Jounetsu Ramen. Cocktails at Bamboo Club or Whatever Lola Wants.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?

I’ve been super lucky to have family, friends, and teachers that always encouraged me to explore creatively. My parents, my grandparents, and my uncle deserve big love for exposing me to the movies, music, books, and characters that first inspired my love for visual storytelling. I was really close with my grandmother, who gave me a camera that I learned to shoot on and fell in love with. My man @phred.t.photo is a badass photographer, we started shooting around the same time in Chicago and we keep each other motivated to keep going with it. And mentorship my girl @casiewndl she’s a photographer/director based in LA that I have loved learning from over the last year.
