We had the good fortune of connecting with Monique Kidd and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Monique, why did you pursue a creative career?
Art has always been a part of my life whether it was acting as a release or a useful skill to assist my sibling with homework . As an adolescent I saw a market that needed to be filled with my skill and I leaned all the way in hoping for the best outcome .
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art journey began with my own desire to express myself in ways words could not convey. I envision my art to be similar to the idea of an old Jamaican Grandmother sharing random memories of her life lived making it unique to my own personal experiences. My more recent however has been surrounded around the sole theme of joy and comfort as I partnered within organization dedicated to creating safe spaces for children and adolescents. The challenges I have faced with art are more like lessons that have allowed me to be the artist I am today with each issue challenging my adaptability. If there’s something I would like for people to take from my art is it’s something fun to look at or think about, consider it a peek into my memories, thoughts and sometimes a way of providing joy and comfort .
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have to shout out Richard Nattoo who assisted me in truly learning my craft and my chosen brother PaigeZombie who encouraged me to step into the world of murals while teaching me a few tricks along the way. They both have been instrumental in my growth as an artist and for that I am eternally grateful.
