We had the good fortune of connecting with Mor Anucov and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mor, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I had decided that an artistic career is for me as soon as I realized that what I find most interesting in art is people, stories, and moments. I believe that art, in any form really, is a universal language. It doesn’t matter where you come from and what language you speak you will always get art. Art can reach anyone even if not in the same way. I love how someone might understand one thing from the artwork and another person who looks at the same piece will see something completely different. In one way or another, we all can relate to art.

And today, more than ever, I feel that the authentic human story loses its colour because we are afraid to be real people because real people have flaws and imperfections. However, what I see is the natural beauty and magic in people and the human story we all share.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Throughout my career, I have found the magic that is within photography. I had realized that still photography, more than anything else, is actually a real passing moment in time captured by the hands of an artist. And to me the idea of capturing that particular moment with its essential magic was so powerful, empowering and at the same time fascinating. I feel as if the camera is a time machine that can take me to any unknown moment, present, future or past. Once I’ve started exploring this magic I’ve started slowly developing a style in my work. I could always detect that sense of personal style in artists I adore, but never could I understand how to even begin working towards achieving one of my own. So without spending too much time overthinking it, I leaned into my instincts and intentions and let my heart and love of the art continue to create. And guess what? sure enough, a unique style started to appear. Although the process of finding one’s style never stops, mostly because it keeps evolving and changing as it should, I feel I have reached a recognizable appearance in my work of which I cant be but proud.

My style is the simplicity and naturalism of each and every individual that steps on my set, coloured by a certain sense of time whichever time that may be in each project. A playful colour scheme and thoughtful lighting that expresses a mood, always incorporated with fashion, old school or contemporary. I love playing with different aspects of time and eras, mixing them together to see what interesting results might come out. Yet, the most important thing is always the person in front of me and their authentic self.

Choosing this career path was easy, and by that, I mean the realization of my dream of becoming an artist. The path however was, and at times still is, challenging. From a country that is beautiful and full of art but at the same time small in opportunities I’ve taken one of my biggest steps and decided to move to Canada. This big change practically forced me to start all over and climb from the very bottom again, but it only made the reward all the sweeter. I am very thankful to have such a great support system and my love for the art, those keep me motivated and wanting to keep creating art.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would definitely start by walking downtown Toronto, which is always colourful and exciting. Take the fairy to Toronto island. After a nice bike ride around the island, we would stop at the Island Cafe for a beer and some snacks or a coffee and dessert to the beautiful view of the sunset and Toronto skyline. I would make sure to show my friend the ROM as well as the AGO museums. I’ll take them to try every dish on the menu of The Hogtown Vegan as well as the Touhenboku Ramen’s vegetarian ramen which is amazing!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My partner Anastasia Sobachkin for supporting me and continuing to challenge me to reach even greater goals than the ones I set for myself. Website: https://anucov.com/
