We had the good fortune of connecting with Ms. Laketta Harmon, MHR, SHRM-CP and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Laketta, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Starting my own HR consulting business has been a deeply personal and fulfilling journey for me. From a very young age, I harbored a strong desire to build something of my own, and this aspiration only strengthened as I navigated through my professional career.
Breaking into the HR industry was a significant challenge for me, especially as an African American woman. I recognized the need for diverse perspectives in HR and sought to be a trailblazer in the field. Throughout my corporate experience, I often found myself in situations where I was one of the few, if not the only, person who looked like me in HR roles, especially at higher levels.
This realization fueled my determination to create a space where diversity and inclusion were not just buzzwords but integral parts of the HR landscape. My thought process behind starting my own business was rooted in the belief that I could contribute to the HR industry in a meaningful way by offering a fresh perspective and innovative solutions that prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion-all founded upon my heart to serve and having a deep passion for what I do.
By establishing my HR consulting business, I aim to create an environment where companies can benefit from a range of perspectives, ensuring that their HR strategies are not only effective but also reflective of the diverse workforce they serve. It’s about breaking down barriers, fostering inclusivity, and providing value to organizations seeking a more dynamic and forward-thinking approach to human resources.
In essence, my journey from envisioning my own business as a child to starting an HR consulting firm today is a testament to the power of persistence, diversity, and the belief that positive change starts with individual actions.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
LH HR Consulting is a local HR-based consulting firm that serves the needs of small to medium-sized businesses, seeking guidance and assistance with both business and HR processes. With a commitment to you as the client, services provided are catered specifically to your needs, delivering results and developing productive people to carry out your company’s vision. And leveraging the evolving platform I’m constructing, I engage in speaking opportunities at corporate offices, conferences, and various related events. Whether delivering insights on targeted HR subjects, enriching the learning experience with my expertise, or inspiring individuals to trust in their potential and relentlessly pursue the dreams instilled in them by a higher purpose.
My journey to where I am today in the HR consulting business has been a remarkable and transformative one, marked by persistence, resilience, and an unwavering belief in the vision that God placed in my heart.
My pursuit began in 2004, and despite encountering numerous setbacks, enduring frequent rejections, and receiving advice suggesting I needed more experience or should consider an internship in the field, I didn’t secure my first HR role until 2012. And I don’t discount the advice I was given in any way; however, I learned it is not as straightforward as doing just that.
In those years leading up to my breakthrough, I thought outside the box and took proactive steps to build my expertise and do things like embrace volunteer experience in office environments and assist in HR responsibilities. Despite the setbacks, I pursued my education with determination, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management with an HR focus, an HR Certificate, and ultimately, both my Masters in HR and SHRM-CP license.
The journey was far from easy, but every role I undertook during those challenging years prepared me for the role I hold today. I faced the hardships head-on, drawing strength from the conviction that I was meant to contribute to the HR industry in a unique and impactful way.
As an African American woman, I recognize the importance of breaking barriers in the corporate world. Betting on myself and believing in the gifts that God has given me has been the driving force behind my success. I take pride in the level of service I’ve provided over the years, blending my knowledge, experience, and passion to be a part of the solution and create effective change within my clients’ businesses.
What sets my HR consulting business apart is not just the services it offers but the journey that led to its establishment. I am proud of the lessons learned, the challenges overcome, and the growth experienced. My brand is a testament to the power of resilience, faith, and the pursuit of one’s passion against all odds. I want the world to know that my story is not just about HR consulting; it’s about empowerment, breaking barriers, creating a space and supportive environment for those coming up behind me; to which their journey will be smoother than mines, and the transformative impact that belief in oneself can have on a professional journey.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m an avid traveler and love to not only see but experience different cultures, and everything that comes along with the experience as a whole-especially if there is a beach involved. But, If my best friend were visiting for a week, I would ensure they experience the diverse and vibrant aspects of the area. Here’s an itinerary that captures the essence of what I find most enjoyable like going to the beach, going to live events that include music and entertainment, and of course checking out different restaurants as I am definitely a foodie:
Day 1: Relaxation by the Shore
A peaceful escape for the day at my favorite beach, Clearwater Beach. Enjoy the sun, sand, and the tranquil sound of the waves-admiring the beauty of God’s creation.
Day 2: Checking out Culinary Delights around town: Have lunch at a local gem, and exploring the diverse cuisines the town has to offer. “7th + Grove,” which is located in Ybor City, could be an excellent choice for its live entertainment and vibrant atmosphere.
Day 3: Arts and Culture Extravaganza:
Visiting a local art gallery or museum to appreciate the cultural richness of the area, having lunch at a trendy café in an artsy district, discussing the local art scene. And then attending a Broadway show or any live cultural event that aligns with our shared interests.
Day 4: Culinary Adventures Continue:
Exploring a farmers’ market for a taste of local produce and artisanal goods. And then perhaps participating in a cooking class or food tour to experience the diverse culinary offerings of the region.
Day 5: Nature and Scenic Views:
Venture into a nature reserve or botanical garden or another outdoor based fun activity and maybe a sunset cruise or a scenic drive to appreciate the beauty of the area.
Day 6: Comedy Night and Laughter:
Attend a comedy show for a night filled with laughter and entertainment. And also finding a local dessert spot for some sweet treats.
Day 7: Quality Time with Loved Ones:
Cap off the trip with a farewell dinner at a special place that holds personal significance.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to two pillars that have been instrumental in shaping my journey and success: my family and my unwavering faith in God.
First and foremost, my family is my greatest support system. Their encouragement, love, and belief in my abilities have been the driving force behind my hard work and determination. In every challenge, triumph, and endeavor, their unwavering support has been the anchor that keeps me grounded. This shoutout is a tribute to their sacrifices, guidance, and the countless ways they inspire me to push beyond my limits.
Equally, if not more, important is my relationship with God. I view Him as the CEO of my business, the guiding force behind every decision and the source of my strength during both triumphs and challenges. My faith has been a constant source of inspiration, providing me with the resilience to overcome obstacles and the humility to appreciate the journey. I have overcome so many obstacles and challenges in my life over the years, and without His guidance, I wouldn’t be where I am today, and for that, I am immensely grateful.
Additionally, I want to acknowledge the legacy I aspire to create. The desire to leave a positive and lasting impact on the world propels me to work diligently every day. It is not just about personal success; it is about building something meaningful that will endure beyond my lifetime. This shoutout is a recognition of the legacy I am working tirelessly to create and the positive contributions I aim to make to those around me.
In essence, my dedication extends to those who have shaped my personal and professional journey, my unshakeable faith in God, and the legacy that fuels my passion for hard work and perseverance.
