We had the good fortune of connecting with Nakia Robinson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nakia, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I wanted to have creative control. Be able to tell stories that are relatable to everyday people.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
It was a difficult journey at first. I had three books deals and my project was shelved. I lacked confidence as a result and thought my project would not come to fruition. I also believed no one would be interested in any books I created. My husband set up the business and help make me see the vision. It wasn’t long after, I was able to self-publish my first book. Soon after I was traveling to various events. My books are very relatable because I believe books shouldn’t just be read, they should be experienced. Readers have told me they’ve laughed, cried, and pretty much were on an emotional rollercoaster.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would start the morning off somewhere like Columbia lake. We spend that time reflecting, meditating taking in the calming view of the water. For lunch, we would try some restaurants like the Hue Cafe & Apothecary, check out some arts, and check out the museums or workshops. Later part of the evening we would go to the National Harbor walk around enjoy the atmosphere, people have some drinks, and maybe go to the casino.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Music has always been my muse, India Arie’s song, Strength, Courage, and Wisdom encourages me to use my voice. My husband also gave me the push to start my business. I have been very fortunate, as I have had countless readers tell me how my characters were relatable and inspiring, which is extremely rewarding and makes me happy that I started this business.
