We had the good fortune of connecting with Nancy Dumay and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nancy, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Being in the Diaspora, it was evident the Community was craving for something that could link them to their roots. I wanted to create something that not only represents the culture; but, something that can be worn at any type of events and by anyone no matter your field of work.

The demand was already there, the execution was a matter of time and the final step was choosing the right team.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Although Wearable Art is centuries old, I wanted to create a marriage of Art and Modern Couture so both men and women of all shapes and nationalities would feel confident wearing them. I was thrilled when many started attending Galas, Weddings and office meetings with their KalturalRoots attires.

In 2006, I started as a one-man show but gradually grew into a team of 6. It wasn’t easy as we made several mistakes along the way such as fabric, paint and pricing.  We learned a lot about the type of fabric that would absorb the paint such as Linen and Cotton; yet,  able to wash and retain the same vibrant colors of the paint.  To maintain the integrity of the line, the highest quality of paint had to be used. I knew that our customers would appreciate quality and fashion.

Our Slogan is: Be Culturally Connected to your roots with Essence of Culture.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite spot in the city is Miami Beach where we could find the best food and diners in the city. Solas is one of my favorite spots to take my guests to experience an open bar on a rooftop.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My parents and my Kalturalists deserve all the credit for the continuous support and trust that I will promote our Culture in the diaspora and around the world.
