We had the good fortune of connecting with Nancy Matthews and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nancy, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’ve had the entrepreneurial spirit since the age of 5 when my friend and I picked roses from her mother’s garden and made perfume to sell and we did quite well (her mother wasn’t so happy that we picked all her roses.) In my adult life I’ve had a wide variety of side-hustles to support me as a single mom, raising two children. In 2002 I took the plunge into full-time business ownership and have never looked back.
What I love about having my own business is the freedom it provides. Freedom to choose when I work and how I work, freedom to pursue my calling and freedom of expression to share what I have with others.
Women’s Prosperity Network in particular, was created in 2008 to share resources, education and connections for women to chart their own course for freedom and fulfillment.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
What I’m most proud of is that culture of our community in Women’s Prosperity Network is based upon the principles in my book, The One Philosophy, which is about treating each and every person you meet as “The One.” This culture causes newcomers to immediately feel welcomed and supported and fosters deep connection in a spirit of co-opetition.
Our business has succeeded following these principles and it’s rewarding to see our members succeeding by following these as well.
Through the past 17 years there have been many ups and downs and even times when we were tempted to call it quits. What has kept us going is the desire to make a difference and knowing how to hold our vision and pivot our strategy when needed.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We’d start off with a trip to Siam House on 17th Street Causeway in Fort Lauderdale for lunch, following by a drive along A1A to then do some shopping at The Galleria Mall.
During their week-long visit we’d spend plenty of time at the beach, go to our pool clubhouse and make sure we fit in a show at the Broward Center, take their children to the Museum of Discovery and Science and of course – out Alligator Alley for an airboat ride., we may even hop on the Jungle Cruise if they haven’t done it before!
We would catch live music at Galluppi’s and be sure to have snacks and margaritas at Ole-Ole in Plantation.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to my two sisters and co-founders of Women’s Prosperity Network, Trish Carr and Susan Wiener. They have been my biggest supporters and fans from giving me a safe haven after college graduation, helping me raise my two children (the best Aunties ever!) and cheering me on during my many side-hustles and endeavors.
When the inspiration to create Women’s Prosperity Network came about, they were all-in, wanting to be part of this powerful movement and they’ve been integral to it’s success – now in our 17th year of business.
