We had the good fortune of connecting with Natalya Lowe and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Natalya, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Being a makeup artist involves using a variety of tools, techniques, and products to enhance or transform a person’s appearance through the application of makeup. I have always had an eye for color, texture, and composition, as well as the ability to envision a particular look or style and bring it to life through my work. I love the art I use in makeup to enhance a person’s natural features, create illusions, and transform their appearance to suit a particular theme, mood, or character. I love having the opportunities to work in theater, film, television, fashion, bridal, and special effects. I am capable to adapt to the demands of each job. I have always had a strong sense of creativity and ability to think outside the box to create unique and original looks. I stay up to date with the latest trends and techniques in the industry, while being able to bring my own unique perspective and style to my work.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Its crazy to look back at my younger self and see where I am today. I remember being 15 years old when I first started to play with makeup. I practiced on myself multiple times a day and never thought I could make this a full time career. People in my small town started to recognize my talent and hired me for their important days. I never knew I could make money off doing something I love and have a passion for. All throughout high school I dreamed of attending a makeup school in Los Angeles. My family did not think much of it but I wanted to prove them I was serious about making this dream come true. After all the practice and clientele I started back home, I made the official idea to pursue this passion. I was young and scared of what came next, but I knew I just had to jump. Moving to Los Angeles has been the best decision I have made for myself and career. Of course it is hard to be away from your friends and family in the big city all alone, knowing no one. But, I had such a passion for makeup and knew this was my path. Moving to California all on my own not only made me stronger as an induvial but strengthened my faith. I could not be where I am without my faith. Los Angeles has a purpose for me and my career and I have met some amazing and talented people while doing so. I know people back home support and motivate me in what I do, which only makes me want to work harder. Some look up to me and that inspires me in every way.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Exploring the city all on my own has made me realize that our world is so big and I want to explore all of it. With my career as a freelance makeup artist, I have traveled to many areas for work that I wouldn’t necessarily explore on my own outside of work. I have asked many clients and LA raised people where the hot spots are. California is so beautiful. Compared to Iowa, there is so much more to take in. There are the mountains, the beaches, the dessert and the city life. I have always been one to enjoy the simple things and whenever my friends and family come to visit, I take them to the spots I know they wont forget. I would one day take them to the beach to enjoy the sand and sunsets. I would take them to the dessert to experience the quiet life and nature. I would take them into the hills and mountains to explore a long hike. I would take them into the city to live the night life. There are endless things to do here and many more spots I have yet to explore.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to shout out my beautiful hard working mother. She raised me and my brother as a single parent and showed me that if you put your mind to something, you can achieve anything on your own. My mother is a cosmetologist so I grew up with the beauty side of things. I watched her cut and style hair almost every day. She plays an important role in shaping who I am today. She has shown me unconditional love and support towards my career choice. Moving across the country all on my own away from her, was a tough and big decision. She has helped me achieve professional success and I recognize and appreciate the positive impact she has on me and my career. When following my dream to have my own freelance makeup business, I knew I could look to her on how to make that possible because I saw how she did that on her own with her business.
