We had the good fortune of connecting with Natasha Gonzalez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Natasha, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I believe that success is a direct reflection of the number of risks one takes in their lifetime. A quote I tend to live by is ‘no risk, no reward.’ Originally born and raised in Montreal, I made a decision to move to Toronto on my own and start my own business. It was one of the biggest risks I’ve taken, however it was the decision that propelled me to where I am today. Once I decided that I wouldn’t let fear dictate my life, I found it much easier to face and overcome anything that has been thrown my way. Although some risks don’t always work out as planned, I don’t see them as failures. No matter the outcome, it makes you stronger and more resilient. There is never a perfect time to take risks but as Geena Davis once said “If you risk nothing, then you risk everything.”

What should our readers know about your business?
As an interior designer, you’re faced with challenges and daily set-backs, whether it’s items being on back order, the wrong material being shipped, etc. I’m most proud of my ability to overcome and deal with anything that comes my way thanks to my solution-oriented mindset. I believe my business has grown through the long lasting relationships I have established with every single one of my clients – communication is key. Nothing is ever easy, however, when you love what you do, it’s worth it. A positive mindset is extremely impactful when being an entrepreneur.

One of the lessons I’ve learned along the way is to trust your gut and follow your heart. I believe in treating every project equally, big or small. Everyone should have a space they love to come home to and I’m grateful that I’m able to experience that process with my clients.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m all about experiences and activities and tend to stay away from the conventional tourist attractions. Now that the summer is approaching, we’d start with a beautiful brunch Downtown Oakville, Hexagon is my go-to spot which is great for people watching! Then we’d make our way to Tannery Park to walk by the water before heading to one of the spots where we could rent sea-doos and do water sports. After enjoying some time outdoors, I’d bring them into the city of Toronto which has many cute spots to check out like the Distillery District, the St. Lawrence Market, Yorkville, etc. In addition, there is a huge variety of gourmet restaurants such as Mamakas Taverna and Myth which is great for greek food! Moretti, which is definitely one of my go-to’s for Italian. Kasa Moto in Yorkville for modern Japanese cuisine, the patio is a must-see in the summer! Last but not least, Mother Cocktail Bar which is a hidden gem!

Ending the night on one of the beautiful rooftop terraces in the city is definitely the way to go for anyone who is coming from out of town!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mother, she has always been a voice of encouragement in any decision I’ve made. She has always supported me on my journey and has pushed me to live a life that was authentic and true to myself. I truly believe that my determination and drive has stemmed from seeing her juggle life as a single mom. No matter the situation, she consistently approached it with a positive attitude and mindset. One of the most important lessons she’s taught me is to always do what makes me happy and never question my choices based on the opinions of others.
