We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicholas Barbosa and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nicholas, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Objectivity. Plain and simple. I think the reason a lot of people, including myself in the past, fail to accomplish the things they want is that they allow their emotions to cloud their judgments of what they could or should do, what is possible and impossible, and what they can or cannot achieve. Sometimes this is done consciously, sometimes not.

People will dream of a life they want to have or things they want to achieve, but get intimidated by the amount and intensity of work required to get there. And that’s where the victimization starts… “I can’t go to the gym everyday because of work” or “Try doing that with 2 kids at home”. A lot of success is just getting over the lies you tell yourself.

In short, don’t aim to do your best. Do what is required.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The field of strength and conditioning, as well as physical therapy and rehab is quite young. It really emerged in the 80s and 90s after all the Russian scientific papers made their way into the US following the Cold War. For that reason, a lot of the principles that guide the fields of exercise and rehab that were discovered prior to that are obsolete. University programs and even PT school are still teaching outdated concepts that no longer should be the industry standard. This leaves us with a model for physical health and performance with many pitfalls that not only regular people. but professional athletes fall victim to.

Have you ever asked yourself why so many athletes, despite having “the best trainers and medical staff in the world” have such a high rate of injuries and dysfunctions as a consequence of their sport? Or why active people keep reinjuring the same body part over and over again?

The answer is that, from a very young age, athletes and active individuals are missing some crucial pillars in their training that would prevent them from back tracking in their performance.

I grew up in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Needless to say, I played soccer nonstop for 13 years of my life. Once I moved to America as a teenager, I had already experienced injuries that kept me off the field. The same was true once my main modality of physical activity switched from soccer to weightlifting at the gym.

And if there is one thing that I absolutely despise is not being able to do what I love, when I want to do it, with who I want to do it with. The ability to move well and pain free is a hallmark of our personal freedom. Movement is how we imprint our internal thoughts and feelings into the external world. Take that away from us, and we are limited in our self expression.

With the education I have accumulated over almost a decade of training experience, half a decade of being a professional in the field, and multiple high level educational anatomy, physiology and kinesiology seminars, I have developed a mission. I want to be a part of the change of the entire rhetoric of the fields of health and performance, having the ability to help recreational and professional athletes do what they want, for longer and at a higher level.

I love sports. I love physical activity. I love giving people the freedom to do what they do best at the highest level!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Being a big fan of sports, we would definitely attend a big sports event of whatever team is in season at the moment. I happen to be the biggest Heat fan, so preferably it would be a Miami Heat game.

There are some local spots I also enjoy near Fort Lauderdale in Las Olas to grab some food, hang out by the beach. Il Mulino is a great italian restaurant near downtown that I often go to when others come to visit.

As for the beach, I personally prefer the west coat beaches better than any of the ones in the Atlantic. The Gulf Coast has prettier waters, thinner and whiter sand, less parties, less alcohol, more families, more wildlife, and, the cherry on top, the SUNSET. A day in Naples or Marco Island would be a must.

Besides that I would take them to my gym so they could check out the spots where I do most of my work and where my videos get recorded so they could get a bit of a behind the scenes of my life as well!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Oh man! So many…

But at the foundation of everything, which is mental, I believe the most influential figure in my intellectual development was Dr. Jordan B Peterson.

Fantastic public speaker, writer, psychologist. There I say the most knowledgeable person in modern history. Had the pleasure of meeting him in person in March of this year in Tampa, Florida.

Fantastic person!
