We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicholle Overkamp and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nicholle, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
I truly don’t believe in balance and feel like the word itself causes too much pressure. But this concept has evolved A LOT for me over time. To me, being an entrepreneur, I’m all about channeling my energy to what is needed or felt in the moment, and that is never really balanced. I often find when I’m immersed in a project, my house an utter mess or I haven’t spent as much quality time with my husband. But it’s not forever and it is how I operate. I’m an all-in person and like to be present. Most of the time, work is a priority, while other times, I choose to prioritize my relationships, free-time, or vacation. It’s integration and harmony for me, not balance.
That said, initially, I started with the mind-set that, to be successful, you must work ALL THE TIME. While working all day, every day, I found myself “fake-working”. I was so exhausted I wasn’t very productive and found myself being present just to be present but didn’t know what I needed to focus on. I felt guilty for taking breaks and when I did, I would punish myself. I will never forget the day my husband surprised me with a massage when I planned on working that Saturday and the whole massage, I would not let myself enjoy it and only thought of what I should be doing instead. What. A. Shame.
Working all the time was the behavior I saw all around me from other advisors. I had no idea how to allow myself to rest or what type of work mattered most. Over time, after reading dozens of books and spending thousands of dollars on coaching, I do life a lot differently! My business is my baby and I still choose to have a full schedule and work a lot, but I absolutely love it! Now, my work is more aligned and integrated into other things I find joy in. I focus on what I want to focus on, cut out all the bulls@#$ and have learned to ask for help. I built an incredible team and only do the things in my zone of genius and delegate the rest. I can prioritize self-care, breaks, working out and vacation all while the company is running better than it ever has.
What should our readers know about your business?
I’m the CEO and founder of two companies:
Wilcox Financial Group:
I founded the company because I wanted to create a space where we would focus on planning, listening, and doing the right thing – not sales. The cornerstone was giving women a space where they could feel at home, be heard, and be vulnerable without being surrounded by ego and jargon. I was tired of doing everything the way other firms were doing it. I knew women deserved better and I could do better. I wanted to create a movement behind how we talk about, see, and feel about money. Money is a language we aren’t taught in school, and we don’t appreciate how complicated it can be. The more women are educated about finances, the more we can work to change the mindset around women and money.
Building a financial planning practice for women and couples in a world dominated mostly by older, white men and creating something that looks different, hasn’t been easy. But it’s been fulfilling, and we’ve been able to touch thousands of lives. Building the practice over the last decade has given me so much perspective, insight, and wisdom on how to grow a company through adversity.
PowHERhouse Money Coaching
PowHERhouse Money Coaching was born out of the desire to bridge the gaps we encountered through our financial planning firm. We learned that many women want to get financial basics through 1:1 coaching – focusing on mindset, habits, behavior, education, and cashflow. We also created business coaching programs to provide impactful support and community to ambitious female entrepreneurs. The business coaching is really what I wish I had available to me over the last decade while growing my company. Strategy, support, finances, and confidence!
To reach more women, we created fun and simple online courses. And Sarah (Our COO) and I also wrote our book, Money Bitch: A No-BS guide for Smart Women Who want to Own their Financial Future. Our goal is to make education around money more accessible to women everywhere!
Women have within them the ability to own their financial future, enabling them to live a life they love and deserve.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My team. they are the ultimate support system that has allowed the company to grow and me to shine in my zone of genius.
