We had the good fortune of connecting with Nick Wodner and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nick, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I think the most important factor is the energy you bring to each session and the relationships you build over time. My purpose is to help kids or adults live a better life by optimizing their health and performance. Through sports performance and fitness. It is important that as a trainer/coach, you always bring your energy to each lesson. There are a lot of trainers and coaches that do the same thing you do, so how do you stand out. How do you differentiate yourself. For me it has been having the best time with my clients during our sessions via positive energy, music, good vibes, keeping it light & at the same time working towards our goals. That is what leads to lifetime success. Having clients and people that enjoy you for you
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business is all about optimizing your health and performance through sports and fitness. There is a lot of incorrect ways of doing things in todays world that are damaging to the body long term. I want to teach the correct way of working out, what exercises are best, which we should stay away from. Things like that
Long story short, I worked at a basketball academy doing everything for them while not being paid enough. But I kept working hard. One day I approached a parent about doing private basketball classes at her house. She sent out a Facebook message and we got like 40 responses. That is how I started my growth, I wouldn’t be here without her. From there word of mouth kept spreading and I became super busy teaching basketball classes on my own that I quit my basketball academy job. Over the years I’ve narrowed down what I want to offer and what that is, is sports performance training for youth/adults for any sports. For example: Strength, conditioning, speed, agility, etc. Where I am not focused on skill development for that sport, rather getting you stronger and faster for your sport. I also always loved fitness so I am doing general fitness personal training sessions as well. I do not have a studio, I travel to you in the north Miami area.
The lessons I learned along the way are that this owning a business and being a trainer thing is not easy. There is no easy ride to the top. It is literally a roller coaster. There are months where everything is great. And months where there is a bunch of cancellations. There are people you love working with, but they leave you within a year. So its understanding that this business is always flowing, don’t get caught up in emotions and always keep a good positive mindset. Communication has been key in order to make sure the clients and myself are always on the right page.
However I wouldn’t trade any of it back. This is what I want to do for the rest of my life. I love making my own schedule. Doing my own marketing & everything that comes with being a business. It is way harder than you think, but its all worth it!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Considering I don’t go out much (at all lol) this should be fun. Some cool places in the Miami area are Lincoln Road, Miami Design District, Wynwood.. Plenty of walking area with shops and food options. I would probably catch a Miami Heat game if you never been, take a walk on the beach and visit some museums down in south Miami
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
DBC Fit in Miami Design District has been vital to where I am today. I thought I knew a lot in the fitness and sports performance world. I have taken 3 or 4 seminars with them and everything I thought I knew before was nothing compared to the amazing research and demonstrations they taught. They opened my eyes in how to correctly train people not just for aesthetics, but learning proper techniques to reduce the likelihood of injury. Everything they do is science based with tons of research and I’m thankful to have taken their courses. My clients have felt so much better since I applied what I learned from DBC Fit, David Alexander, Donnie Raimon& all their other trainers
