We had the good fortune of connecting with Nico Stipcianos and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nico, can you tell us about an impactful book you’ve read and why you liked it or what impact it had on you?
“The War of Art” by Steven Pressfield I picked up this book at a time when I was thinking about creating new work and I was trying to put my ideas into concrete plans. This book changed my life completely for the better; not because of the words, but what happened while reading it. I met my future wife while reading this book at a dog park in Miami. This book is a constant reminder to remain open to new ideas, new experiences and allowing life to happen.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started with photography because it was fun; I photographed friends while hanging out, skating, surfing, it was just an everyday documentary of life. Photography gave me the opportunity to go out and explore. It took me to places I had always dreamed about: India, Thailand, Bali, and so many more as I learned about cultures and life.

Photography has always been there as a tool for me to use to connect with people. It allows me to have a visual conversation with the person I am photographing. I have a unique way of capturing images by leaning into the moments and movements that occur. I love to find the essence of a person in each photograph.

I’ve learned that everyone has their own story to tell, but you have to listen. The most important thing is to be open to hearing what people have to say so that you can document the story they’re telling.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
– Take a dip at the beach in the morning and watch the sunrise – Get a coffee & amazing pan de bono from Per’La
– Go for a long bike ride at Shark Valley in the Everglades *highly recommend
– Walk the dogs by South Pointe Park
– Grab an açaí bowl at Sproutz
– Do a sunset run over the Key Biscayne bridge
– Have dinner at Los Fuegos at the Faena

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family deserves all of the shoutout. My sister, Susan Stipcianos, is a strong, independent businesswoman who showed me that you have to work hard for what you want in life and what you love. My parents, Ignacio and Victoria, gave me culture, art and the freedom to be myself from the beginning. Lastly, My wife, Elizabeth, is my backbone and a reminder to be a better person every day. A special thank you to my amazing professors, including Miami’s own Joseph Tamargo, who helped develop me into the artist I am today.
