We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicole D. Miller and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nicole, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
My primary goal with being an author and starting my publishing company is to create stories that feature resilience, faith and encouragement (as a writer) and create spaces for others to do the same (as a hybrid publisher). I want to offer light and hope in a world full of darkness and hardship as my own life experience has been full of light in the midst of difficulties.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I literally had no idea that writing would be such a huge part of my purpose and that I would fall head over heels with it! I have a background in business and even own and operate my own bookkeeping business but becoming an author was a sweet surprise in life.
I started blogging in 2012 and wrote a post that inspired my first book “How to Overcome Heartbreak: Recovering From Misguided Love”. That book was a retelling of my first heartbreak which devastated me at the time. I dealt with emotional pain, hopelessness, and did not see purpose to my life when that relationship ended. I found healing in my faith and community and offer tips to others that can help them to heal from a tough breakup. My career in business became stagnant but my writing was birthed out from that stagnation.
Open door after open door immersed in my writing after my last book “Stories for the (Urban) Soul”. I became more diligent and consistent with blogging and marketing my book and am still focused on re-branding myself. Previously I did not see myself as an author but have come to realize that being so will be my greatest contribution to this generation. This newfound view of myself as a “real” writer has had a lot to do with the re-branding.
Although it has not been easy to build awareness and visibility for my books (most indie authors/artists will tell you this) the opportunities that have emerged continue to motivate me. I have seen the impact my writing has had on others and believe the value of my product will be shared by many.
I also am surrounded by dreamers/artists/creatives/builders who are working hard to manifest their dreams and goals and that keeps me moving forward also.
At this time I am most excited about my upcoming novel. I have been working for 2 years on it and will be releasing it in early 2023. Historically I was too intimidated to set out to write a whole novel. I never dreamed I could accomplish such a complex feat, yet here I am on the cusp of publishing it. And I’ve even been told it’s really good!
My career in writing literally has been one step at a time. Each step has led me to this space of being a soon to be novelist and starting my own hybrid publishing company Nicole D Miller Publishing LLC. I started off blogging, wrote a 60-page nonfiction book, wrote another, then tried my hand at fiction with the release of Stories for the (Urban) Souls (a compilation of short stories). Now I offer help to other indie authors through editing services, 1 on 1 coaching and give tips on publishing via my eBook “Self Publishing 101: Everything You Need to Know From One Author to Another” in addition to my hybrid publishing services.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to the beach if it’s summer! Cleveland has done a great job with cleaning up Edgewater park and it’s perfect when the sun is shining in 80 degree weather. There’s food and drinks available and the volleyball net set is always ready to go. Many brave the actual water but I prefer to lay out with a good book and my favorite playlist on repeat.
We would hit up Ohio City and dine at one of the local restaurants that offer healthy, tasty dishes with outdoor patio seating such as TownHall. Usually there is a concert or play at Playhouse Square that we could catch or if we’re in the mood for an open mic we could hit up BSide Lounge off Euclid Heights Blvd.
Next to BSide is Courtyard where they serve amazing food and drinks and usually have live music. We could go to an outdoor festival at Larchmere, Lakewood or downtown. If there’s a game and they’re into sports we could watch The Guardians or The Cavs do their thing. I love visiting wineries such as Michael Angelo’s and we would definitely have to take a trip to Garden of Eden rooftop who just did an amazing job at remodeling.
For a more livelier scene there are plenty of parties, bars and hangout spots in Lakewood or downtown. Improv is great for catching a comedy show and in the same area Cleveland offers boat rides, jet skis and other fun water sports. If my friend is the artsy type we would check out 78th studios who do great monthly events where local artists showcase their work for purchase.
Sometimes there are fashion shows and book fairs and always pop ups that we could attend. Because I’m an author we would definitely visit some cute bookstores like Mac’s Books and Loganberry Books and because coffee and reading go hand in hand we would check out Roasted Tremont who make amazing coffee! Roasted Treemont also has a little shop in the back called Refried Vintage where you can buy trendy thrift apparel. On that note, we could also go thrifting at my fav thrift store Avalon Exchange either off coventry or on the west side of Cleveland off Detroit.
Other great restaurants to check out would be Felix, Saritas and Zhug! There’s sooo much to do in Cleveland!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Definitely! I would not be where I am today without my TRIBE. First and foremost my mother and grandmother who raised me and are rooting for me from eternity. Then there’s my spiritual group and mentors who have been more like family these 15+ years. Then my dear sisters who have walked with me on this journey of faith and manifestation of purpose.
