We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicole Dixon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nicole, why did you pursue a creative career?
I love this question. Creativity pursued me. It’s an interesting concept, right?
I have a master’s degree in accounting with a specialization in forensics. In 2016 I had my son, the second of my two children. That year was a pivotal year in my life. Having one child puts you into survival mode. Having two puts your life into perspective.
I’ve always enjoyed reading. In elementary school, I thought I might become a songwriter. I failed. In high school, I considered becoming a dancer. I wasn’t particularly skilled at that either. I was good at numbers, patterns and data. So, I took what I was good at and made a career. A decade into that career, I realized I was missing a fundamental part of myself, but I wasn’t sure how to find it, or even where to look. That’s when I began writing my first novel. The first book took me three years to write. I gave up on myself numerous times. Then, I would look at my children, and wonder how I would feel if they had a dream, but couldn’t allow themselves to achieve it for fear of failure.
I was my own barrier to entrance, blocking the path to my accomplishments with doubts that only I could hear.
In December 2020, I hit publish for the first time. It was a major accomplishment for me. I proved something to myself. I wasn’t a failure.
What’s more? I realized I could create puzzles and patterns throughout my writing using interconnected standalone novels. I could combine the things I was good at with the things that I loved, and together create a career for myself. I have published eleven novels since then.
In 2022 I began publishing a series of children’s books under a separate pen name, M C Dixon, promoting technical and skilled careers through adventures with a magical hotdog named Larry. I encourage children to dream big and lead extraordinary lives through their ordinary. Find your extra.
In 2023 my ten-year-old daughter and I published a co-written spinoff series to the first, and we’re still in the process of releasing those books. She found her extra. I hope that I can encourage people to live an extraordinary life by finding themselves, and not fearing failure.
We only fail when we don’t try, and trying is half of the adventure that makes us who we are. My creativity found me, even after I stopped looking for it.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

What sets me apart?
I’m also a children’s book author and public speaker, promoting literacy and following your dreams.
Author, M C Dixon
– The Adventures of Larry the Hotdog
– The Adventures of Daisy the Donut (co-written with my ten-year-old daughter, G R Dixon)

Two pen names. Two totally different genres. One purpose.

I started writing to find myself again after having my second child. I was drowning in motherhood. I was drowning in the ordinary day-to-day tasks that seemed impossible to complete. Writing gave me something back. I gained power and identity again as a woman, wife, and mother. I found my extra and my life suddenly became extraordinary. Now, I share my story in the hopes that I find you where you are in life. Sometimes the ordinary can become overwhelming. You can find your extra. That’s not the same thing for every person. But, the steps to get there can look similar.

I want to do this life with you. I hope that the underlying messages in my books are an encouragement to whoever might be reading them.

I hope that my romance novels empower women. I hope they make you feel sexy again when maybe you’ve lost that. I hope you learn to love yourself again, and in turn, realize that true love isn’t just a fallacy we read about. Stories are just that, fictional. But, I write about love because I’ve experienced it to the greatest extent, and I want to share that feeling with you. I hope I can make you feel something deep in your soul. I want you to smile, and cry with me as we go on this journey together, and in the end, I hope you realize that your heart is full, and you are capable. You can do this!

I hope that my children’s books teach children that they can dream big. They are in charge of their own destiny, and that starts right now. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for me, but more than that…I can’t wait to see the impact these kids can make on the world if they begin TODAY.
