We had the good fortune of connecting with Nkechi “Kechi” Okpala-Thompson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nkechi “Kechi”, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Don’t ever be afraid to take risks as long as they are calculated and impactful. Before I went independent, I worked for an entertainment company that tried to black list me. If I didn’t have the courage to step out on my own and start my own company; who knows where I would be today. Creating Kech This Inc. has enabled me to have worked and contributed to some amazing projects while travelling the world.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Kech This Inc. (KECHTHIS) is a multi-cultural communications, marketing and event production firm that integrates strategic partnerships with entertainment, government, fashion, lifestyle and non-profit organizations.
We are committed in providing excellent client services through a cross-disciplinary, client-team approach. Through these connections, Kech This Inc. has learned that the keys to success don’t just involve striking an alliance just for the sake of a pass. Success rests on partnerships that distinguish a brand’s essence, enhance a company’s market share and meaningfully impact its bottom line.
We specialize in public relations, corporate communication strategy, sponsorship, events, experiential marketing and promotions.
I started in the field of Public Relations and Entertainment while in college at Florida A&M University. At that time I had worked for X/O Management and Rockers Island Entertainment who produced concerts and special events in Miami during Spring Break, Memorial Weekend, Miami Carnival and Labor Day. After completing my degree I went on to create and head the Communications Department of X/O Management & Rockers Island where we produced memorable events like DJ Khaled’s the Temple, Funk Master Flex Carshow, Best of the Best Concert Series and so much more.
It was then I got my first break when DJ Khaled asked me to support in publicizing his first debut album, “Listen…The Album”. That opportunity solidified my position as a publicist and opened doors to projects with Headliner Marketing Group (Michael “LIV on Sundays” Gardner), American Black Film Festival, Lil Wayne’s 21st Birthday, Justo’s Mix Tape Awards, Historic Virginia Key Beach Park Trust, World Economic Forum Africa, New Amsterdam Gin, Miss Nigeria Beauty Pageant and so much more.
Was it easy? Absolutely not! Being an independent black woman in the industry can come with it’s challenges and battles. I’m thankful to have people who believed in me to rock with me no matter what!
I want the world to know I am here, ready and open for business.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Historic Virginia Key Beach Park Chef Creole
MUCE 305
Lil Green House Grill
Morgans
Sheri Restaurant
World Famous House of Mac
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The top credit for who I am today goes to first GOD. Second to My Parents, Family and Husband for always holding me down and keeping me grounded. Lastly, a huge shoutout to renowned publicist Juanita Stephens and Joey “Budafuco” Louis for teaching me to always have an ace in the hole.
