We had the good fortune of connecting with Nora Curia and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nora, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My experience building my own business was very slow, it took me many years to figure out what I wanted to be true about myself as a mental health professional in the United States. I came with a different, unique mind set and background.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have learned a lot here working in this system, in places such as hospitals, substance use and abuse institutions, and the education system. All of these settings have had challenges that were difficult to overcome, but there have always been professionals who have taught me how to overcome them. I must mention that I continue to study and supervise my patients on a monthly basis.
Perhaps the best advice I can give young professionals starting out in this field is to constantly work on oneself as a professional so that you are prepared for whatever a patient brings to the consultation.

Aditionally you must constantly supervise your cases to maintain your private parctice.

Also it’s good to know that the private practice has the image of “Cinderella” after 12:00 pm because you have to deal with insurance companies.
That it is part of the system in which the professional is at the mercy of the insurance company that has the power to pay you as he decides. They may authorize you to see the patient and then decide not to pay you. In addition, they can call you to do audits in the middle of a holiday. The patient, of course, doesn’t know about this…(“united we are healthier,” says one of my colleagues).

I encourage all new professionals to always keep their own liability insurance handy to call and ask if providing the information requested by the insurance company violates patient privacy. Be careful what you sign in the contract with the insurance companies.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Puff MIAMI!!! Miami is one of the most important places to make your art known. The best artists want to come to Miami to exhibit! ARCH CENTER OF MUSIC! Clasic music.
