We had the good fortune of connecting with Novia Reid and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Novia, what’s your definition for success?
I define success as living your God-assigned calling, fulfilling your dreams, and accomplishing whatever goals you set for yourself. I don’t define success by titles, accolades, or wealth, although each has value.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have a Ph.D. in marriage and family therapy, specializing in couple therapy, and I’m a licensed psychotherapist, speaker, and writer. One of my niches is an area that affects many women but is neglected. I’ve encountered women who’ve lost themselves from setbacks, heartbreaks, and traumas and don’t know how to regain who they are at their core. So, my niche is helping women who have lost themselves regain their identities through a tailored coaching program, Regain Your Core. I’m passionate about this work because women are sometimes encouraged to find themselves again, primarily to attract a man or pursue a relationship. However, women should be encouraged and empowered to heal and find themselves again for themselves first because they are worthy. A woman who knows and is herself is an unstoppable force to reckon with; her greatest asset is a whole and authentic self.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting and I wanted to show them the best time, we’d eat at Honey Uninhibited and Greenstreet Cafe for breakfast or brunch. We’d dine at a hidden gem, Awash Ethiopian Restaurant, for dinner. Miami or South Beach at sunrise or sunset would be a must. We’d visit Margaritaville for a reggae or country concert, go Kayaking at sunset, sign up for a dance class, and visit the best winery. We’d watch a good musical at the Adrienne Arsht Center (you’d understand if you’ve seen The Lion King or The Bodyguard). And we’d hang out at Wynwood to see the different and unique art and shops.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I dedicate my shoutout to my 10-year-old niece Somayah, an author and budding entrepreneur who is intelligent, innovative, resilient, compassionate, and all-around remarkable. She teaches me patience, humility, forgiveness, and gentleness at a tender age. Still, I credit my overall success to God, who has loved, guided, and provided for me and blessed me with an incredible tribe of parents, sisters, friends, and mentors. My life would look much different without their love, support, and help, and I’m grateful for them.
