Meet Obdulio Piloto | Scientist & Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Obdulio Piloto and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Obdulio, what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?
“You can do anything you want, as long as you set your mind to it” I understand why well-meaning people used to, and some still, promote this message. For one, it’s a simple and positive statement one can easily say when someone is down and discouraged. Who doesn’t want it to be true? It’s meant to encourage focus and convey a sense of infinite opportunities. This works well for young children, but does a disservice to teenagers and young adults. Obviously, one does not want to discourage people from taking certain risks and trying something new or difficult. We all know the first step towards an unknown endeavor is the most psychologically tricky, and we often need a ‘push’. Yet such a statement negates the sizable role of luck, which recently has taken a more nuanced meaning: privilege. Moreover, it’s become increasingly laughable to even suggest we live in a meritocracy, where an individual’s efforts, intelligence, and drive is proportionately rewarded. However, the most offensive part of this advice is placing responsibility for success or failure solely on the individual. Why not say: “Life is not fair, but don’t let that stop you from living your best life”
What should our readers know about your business?
Does it sound crazy for a guy raised in a low-income household in Hialeah to take on the multi-billion dollar diagnostics industry? Well… you know what they say about crazy… “Good ideas are always crazy until they’re not” – Larry Page I’m proud to lead a team of scientists and engineers determined to detect diseases early when they are most curable. Our team and I are extremely grateful to the support of Peter Thiel’s Breakout Labs, investors, advisors and supporters. How? Develop a means of simultaneously detecting multiple cancers and other diseases from a single test. Why? Early, accurate detection saves lives and money, while improving quality of life. Obstacles? We are offering something completely new, so explaining the technology carefully and convincingly is critical for adoption. When? First test is expected to launch nationwide next year, with more tests on the way.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I wouldn’t be here without the support of family, life & business partners and teachers who helped me along the way when they had little to nothing to gain.
