We had the good fortune of connecting with Odalys Hernandez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Odalys, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I’ve had my own company most of my career. This time around with House Of Odalys it was a bit of a sink or swim situation but I set myself up for success. I chose not to see it any other way. Six years latter I proved myself right.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
For a long time I would ask myself, what is my purpose in life and all along it was in front of me. I create environments that make people happy, that makes them feel special when they are together as a family or even if they live alone, they know home is where the heart is. After I realized that this is my gift I stopped searching and focused on being my best at what I do. Along the way I have tweaked my communication skills, I am more patient and empathetic. My client is not necessarily very wealthy every-time. It could be a simple job but I treat every job with the same importance and respect. There has been more than one opportunity that I did an interior design job for someone just starting out that could not afford the best of the best. Fast forward 5 years and they have become successful and then I get to do a dream job. The best lesson I’ve learned along the way is to be kind and grateful. You achieve nothing by treating people wrong and being self serving. This mindset is reflected in my brand, yes I’m your designer but I’m also here to steer you through so many choices and to make sure you get the best value for your money. Not everything claiming to be “luxury” is the real deal.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Monday we go to the Design District and lunch at Michael’s Genuine then just hang in the area and do some shopping. Dinner I’ll cook. Tuesday we would have breakfast at Sagrado’s in Downtown then head to the Beach, south of fifth at The Bentley Beach Club. Dinner at Osaka in Brickell. Wednesday happy hour at Melinda’s and stay for their Live Jazz and order dinner, best Branzino!
Thursday drinks and dinner at Casa Tua in Brickell City Center. Exhausted from spending the day at Vizcaya.
Friday we hang out in Wynwood, lunch at KYU and then SOHO House for beach and dinner at their restaurant.
Saturday is spa day at The Standard then dinner at Pao at Faena and we finish the night at The Living Room and listen to live music or hop over to Saxony! Or hit Space, sooo many choices so little time!
Sunday we crash poolside at my beautiful building! We need to rest also. LOL
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Without some really important people in my life and the need of seeing a urgent need for self growth I would not be where I am today. First there are my daughter’s that just totally believed in me and supported me through my whole transition into a new life. Then there is Jay Britto from Britto Charette, my buddy for over 20 years who always believed in me and super encouraged me to go back into being a full on Interior Designer. Daisy Olivera who came up with my company name House Of Odalys, genius! My very tight group of friends that believe in me. I am heavily influenced by the likes of Abraham Hicks, Dr. Joe Dispenza, Deepak Chopra, Wane Dyer, Joseph Rodrigues and of course Neville Hill author of Think and Grow Rich. I just put it in my head that I was going to recreate myself and took off from there.
