We had the good fortune of connecting with Odessa Blythe and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Odessa, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My only thought process was how to become free! We so often stay committed to things that no longer serve us mentally, emotionally or spiritually. For me, my thing was my job. I was so unhappy to the point where I had to choose my mental health over a paycheck that still wouldn’t cover my bills every month anyway. I took a calculated risk on myself and put my 2 week notice in. I pushed my hair braiding business and never looked back! I have been successfully self-employed for 2 years now. Every day, I still can’t believe that I am my own boss and this is my life!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My gift is the art of braiding and styling hair. What sets me apart from others is my natural ability to connect with people. I come from a Social Work background which I believe gives me the empathy and compassion necessary to work with people. It was not easy to get to where I am today. I had to take a leap of faith and bet on myself. I was never sure if my business would be successful or if I would even have enough money to cover my bills every month. I’m proud to be able to meet so many amazing women every day, do their hair, make them look beautiful and they pay me whatever price I ask, what a blessing! Some lessons I have learned along the way is that I am more than enough, even when I did not feel confident in myself, just showing up is enough. I want the world to know that I really care and truly love what I do. There is integrity behind what I do and I’m interested and not only making women and men look good but feel good as well.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When I do go out, I like to visit places where there’s good food, drinks, and live music. For the week, I would probably stay at the W hotel in Ft. Lauderdale. During the day, there are so many things we could do like visit the beach, go shopping, and visit cool restaurants for brunch or lunch. The nightlife is always fun! We could walk the strip and eat at a nice spot with a live band playing like the Rock Bar. That’s just an idea of how I would spend my time in the City for a week long trip. On vacation I am more of a go with the flow type of person so you never know where we may end up!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First, I would like to acknowledge God for his favor over my life. He kept me strong during my lowest times. I don’t know where I would be without him today. Additionally, I would like to recognize my fiance’ for providing me with unconditional love and support everyday. He has been so patient with me and helpful with assisting my business with whatever I need. Also, I have received a ton of love, support and push from my big brother Chalee’ who reminds me everyday who I am and what I am capable of. Lastly, I would like to recognize my cousin and now business partner Brittany, she has motivated me to be great my whole life. I can always count on her to push me outside of my comfort zone while still supporting me through the process. My cousin and I recently launched a new business in January 2021. We sell fashionable hair accessories for all ages and hair types including hair pins and headbands. I am so grateful for this journey and to be able to adorn my client’s heads with accessories from my own hair accessory line!
