We had the good fortune of connecting with Olesia Paliukh and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Olesia, how do you think about risk?
Risk is my middle name. Now I will explain why. I should start by saying that my husband and I came from Ukraine in the midst of Covid, we only had $300 in our pocket for two and 2 backpacks. We came to New York with no friends or acquaintances, no place to live, absolutely nothing. We started our life anew. Madness? Yes, but who does not take risks does not have the life of his dream. That is why risk always plays a leading role in my life and in making any decision. Ever since I was a child, I loved taking pictures, so the occupation of my whole life was obvious. In New York, I was able to get a job as a photographer and after 6 months I bought my own camera. If you are a photographer who lives in New York, you must be the best, so that your name is on everyone’s lips. I have not yet reached this level, but I am convinced that if you do what you love with passion, then you should not worry about fame, after all, this is not the main thing. The main thing is to enjoy what you do. We recently moved to Miami and about a month ago I became a mom. And 2 weeks after giving birth, I returned to my job as a photographer because I can’t imagine life without it. I combine motherhood and work, in some ways it’s also a risk, but I think it’s more about the balance between daily duties and the work that inspires you. In Miami, I continue my path as a photographer and try to improve my skills as a professional.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have my own style and vision, I’m really proud of the shots that I make. The secret of a unique shot is to capture the very moment, the moment of sincere emotion, without staging and theatrical play. Sincere shots are the best shots. Properly built composition = good photo, timely caught moment in violation of all the rules of composition – the best photo. I am inspired by the people I photograph, I am convinced that each person has their own uniqueness and beauty, and it is important to see this.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Miami has the most beautiful sunsets that every traveler should see. As a photographer, I have my favorite places: Crandon Park for a romantic walk, South point park with beautiful sunsets, Design District for shopping and La Mar by Gaston Acurio for a delicious meal overlooking downtown.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am grateful to my husband, who shared with me the care of our newborn son and thanks to him I can do my life’s work. I also want to say that my mother instilled in me a love of photography (maybe it’s heredity), as a child, I remember that the camera was always in a conspicuous place and we regularly went to develop the film, it was exciting. Probably not a single family has so many printed photos, it’s a pity that in modern society the habit of printing photos has gone into the background, because one single photo can bring you back to that very moment and allows you to experience the same emotions as a real time machine. That is why people take photos so that at any moment they can return to where they were happy.
