We had the good fortune of connecting with ORIOL ANGRILL JORDÀ and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi ORIOL, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
That’s a great question. I’m still struggling to find the balance. One of my current projects is about that, by the way. Throwing back in time, when I started working as an artist and also commissions, my whole life was only work and I barely took time for other things that were not art related. I thought I have no right to do that and definitively, I was completely wrong. It took a while to realize how much that was affecting my life. That is another story, though.
Nowadays, my life has changed a lot for the good. I’ve learned a few very important mindsets that really works for me; be aware when you are overthinking, know when to stop and breathe and no one cares more than yourself.
Somehow, when any of those mindsets rings, alarm alert! it is time to do something different. Sometimes I just walk out of the studio and change the views. I have a garden full of plants and stuff that need constant maintenance so there is always something to do or fix under the amazing weather we have here in Mallorca.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My work is difficult to define from my point of view. I’m to attach to it and I can’t say that it is all about something specific once was written in the statement. That is limiting. How can someone be all his/her life talking about the same and only story? All my career, I’ve been learning different traditional techniques and therefore their own language. What I love about them is that they are like languages to me. They all are ways of saying things, which bring different intensities and meanings to what you are trying to express.
Sometimes, I’m mesmerized by a simple sketch made with a few lines and it’s a shame we don’t realize that this drawing compared to another technique can totally defeat the most accurate work in oil painting, for example. The medium is different but depending on the message, it can be perceived more strongly with a few strokes than in a 5m painting, where most of the speech is lost in translation.

I don’t believe in Art that is not meant to be understood. I make art to heal and understand myself through each piece. I think of Art as a cure.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
That is easy living in Mallorca. For those who don’t know, it is a beautiful island in the Mediterranean sea. Warm weather and the best water ever. Any road leads to unique beaches. The best way to know the island is to drive it all over, minifridge full of drinks and snacks without worrying about time until we reach a spot to enjoy the view of the sunset.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Well, there are some people that I admire for different reasons. One of them is my dear Elisabeth Salcedo @eligolondrina who is a very sensible photographer with who I have work with too. Another artist that I deeply admire for his artistic commitment and talent is Aryz.
