We had the good fortune of connecting with Oscar Morejon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Oscar, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
My definition of a work/life balance has changed a lot throughout the years for many reasons. At first, my work/life balance was 100% centered around myself. It was about going golfing, hanging out at a friend’s house, having poker night with my guys, etc. But as time passed, I realized that my work/life balance isn’t just about me, it’s about the relationships that I’m trying to foster. Now, my time off is dedicated to the relationship I value most of all, my marriage. My wife is amazing, and she’s the reason why I do what I do, so it’s important for me to spend time with her and keep that motivation alive. Another thing that has changed about my work/life balance is how I look at it. I don’t think my work hours have lessened throughout the years, but what I have learned to do is really become more efficient with my time off. This not only helps me keep myself in check and focused on what my priorities are, it also helps me disconnect quicker and spend more time with the ones I want to be with. So, for example, if I decide that today I’ll work for 15 hours, then I’m focused on my task for 15 hours and not a minute more. If I want to spend time with my wife having dinner for an hour after that, then you’re not going to see me working at the dinner table. You’re going to see me fully engaged with my wife and not thinking about work, because that time is dedicated to her and nothing else. Having those boundaries helps you compartmentalize your time and commit to what you’re focused on.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
They say that the best thing you can do as an entrepreneur is to find a need, then fill it. Well, that’s where we, my wife Isabella and I, were. We knew that there weren’t a lot of good, reliable, on-time, trustworthy contractors in our city, but our friends were looking for contractors – and we had no one to recommend. We couldn’t advocate for a contractor that offered a strong, ethical, loyal, price-worthy product… and then we thought, why not have that be us? Why not build the company that could offer these things? Why not have it be us who fills that need? That’s when John Bell Construction came to be. JBC is a one-of-a-kind construction company that brings honest, hard-working, intelligent, positive individuals together to work on projects that exude those same attributes. And we got here by following one of our core values – taking pride. Now, I know pride is normally seen as a negative because it’s so self-consuming, but taking pride is a whole other thing. It’s the act of doing your best so that the best is reflected off of you and onto others. It’s being a good team member, setting yourself apart, and striving for excellence in even the smallest of details. It’s knowing that you don’t just represent yourself, you represent the group that you are a part of – and that’s important. After all, we work so hard at what we do and sacrifice so much that it would be a waste of our time if we didn’t do it to the best of our ability. It’s the reason why our reputation is as good as it is – because everyone knows that we take pride in our work, and as our client, you know that means you’re going to get the best final product possible. It wasn’t easy getting to where we are today. It took lots of sacrifices and lessons learned the hard way, but the most important factor behind the success of our business has been our faith. God has really been good to us. I hear so many people saying that they feel like they’re being called to do something, but because they themselves can’t picture what God has in store for them, they never go for it. That’s never been me. My faith made it so that no matter what happened, I knew my company and I were going to be taken care of and provided for – and we have been. He has put such amazing people in my path as both clients and employees. It’s why our business has such a great reputation – because we work in a business that is heavily dependent on people, and I know that the people who are brought to us are there for a reason. So if there’s any wisdom I can share about my experience with John Bell Construction it’s this: If you work hard, if you give it your all, if you take pride in what you do and you have faith, then you can reach whatever goal you set for yourself. My childhood dream was to own my own company – look at me now. Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.”

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was coming to visit me in the good ol’ Miami Dade, I’d take them to all of my favorite 305 spots. They’re bound to meet some interesting people during our tour, so I’d tell them to put on a facemask, get some sunscreen and let’s GO. First thing we’d do is enjoy the best parts of the Cuban culture – the food. We can get cortaditos in Vicky’s bakery, have a frita in El Mago de las Fritas, and eat some delicious food in La Carreta and Latin America restaurants. Then I’d take them to experience the best parts of Calle Ocho – have them watch los viejos doing what they do best in Domino Park and go listen to some live music while we have a drink at Ball & Chain. Once they’ve had their fair share of the Miami Cuban life, then I’d want to take them to do all of the best things Miami has to offer: a nice cafecito at Panther Coffee in Wynwood (where I met my wife), swordfishing off of Matheson Hammocks, pancakes at Big Pink in South Beach, lunch at Monty’s in the Grove, and a sip of the good stuff at Sugar Rooftop Bar and Lounge in the East Hotel in Brickell.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We don’t become who we are on our own. It takes people showing you goodness and encouragement for you to become who you were meant to be. I can’t possibly give a shoutout to everyone, but I want to thank my parents, siblings, friends, colleagues, and everyone who has continuously supported and recommended us. My company and I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for you.
