We had the good fortune of connecting with Paola Schwerer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Paola, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I was born and raised in Dominican Republic, I came to the states when I was only 12 years old and been here since. I was raised by my single working mother and my grandparents , along with 2 aunts. All I ever saw growing up as I remember was my aunts working while going to school for a better future. While my mom worked so hard to give me a decent life, at one point my mother had to leave out of the country for work and had several jobs. So this has in fact shaped me to not only be a hustler but be responsible and focus on what needs to get done first.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When I first decided to learn the craft of eyelash extensions and microblading (in 2016) , the first thing I heard was “don’t waste your time everyone is doing it”. I did not let that discourage me, I mean… we have hundreds of fast food restaurants that all sell food and they all have their own clientele. I am very head on when making decisions, and sometimes that has been a downfall but not in this situation. I decided to take my career serious and go for it . And although some people will hear the word career when associating it with cosmetology and beauty and laugh, let me just tell you, google the numbers lol. I started this with a purpose and along the way I’ve had some bumps on the road but get back on track and won’t stop improving until I perfect what I’m meant to do.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Wow , I mean I love love love to eat! So let’s start with that , I’m very into Japanese, Mexican and Latin food. The first for a good time is “el tiesto café miami”, it’s a Japanese/ Dominican fusion restaurant with the best dancing music and also hookah 😂 If it’s my friend they smoke hookah too. I would definitely take them to the wynwood walls and museums to see some art. The beaches ! Must go to the beaches and of course can’t leave out the miami night life . My favorite club right now is “made in Dr”, is a lounge in the center of wynwood. The music is great, they also have a tapas style menu, and they have a nice outdoor area if you want to have a more relaxed night . The rest will play by ear !
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I don’t think this person knows how much of an impact they had in my life, being that we come from very similar backgrounds and work towards the same goals. Nuhso academy was the first person to teach me how to do volume eyelashes , the funny part is… she thought I already knew how . “Fake it until you make it” haha. But now she’ll know. Also lash makers, I mean, if you know anything about eyelashes you know who she is, that’s every lash artists goal.
