We had the good fortune of connecting with Patricia A Griffin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Patricia A, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My art has always been my focus and it just made sense to find an outlet to share the work directly with the collectors. Starting a business forced me to deal with the less favorable parts of being a creative. Once the basic business skills were achieved they could be used in other businesses. I have started a number of businesses over my career, a historical air b&b, a florist, a home and garden center, and GriffinGallery.com
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a wildlife painter and have been a professional oil painter for 34 years. I live on the South East corner of Grand Teton National Park, Jackson Hole, Wy. Moose, elk, wolves and bison have all been visible from my studio. It has taken me a life time to get here and the inspiration of this area could fill 100 life times. I started painting the landscape right out of college in North East Pennsylvania. It was a brilliant challenge and my style became recognizable. I traveled to all of the United States except Alaska painting. Animals wandered into my landscape paintings 15 years in and quickly became the focus. I go out into the field and observe, sketch, and photograph my subjects. I see vibrations in color and energy fields and capitalize on that. The isolated strokes of paint make for an active surface of what appears to be arbitrary color up close, viewed from a distance the human eye naturally blends the color and creates an animal full personality and life. The greatest reward is seeing the interactions and reactions of the viewer with the pieces. Knowing that the paintings have the power to engage and hold a glance keeps me close to the easel and creating.
A Fine Artist means must wear a lot of hats for success. You need to create, market, apply to shows, ship or transport work, and run the business side. The fun part is creating. The rest makes it a job. Success and Rejection have been a constant reminder to put forward your best and to keep showing up.
Painting is my purpose. The chance to convince a passer by that a wild animal is as an individual ,with quirks and personality, every bit as much as our beloved pets, makes it all worth it.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Grand Teton National Park offers natural beauty at its finest. Sunrise wild life tour to see the otter at Oxbow. Sit and listen to the Bison in Elk flats, A sleigh ride in to the Elk on the refuge to be with thousands of elk. An hour or two watching the Big Horn sheep on Miller Butte with a stop a Cafe Genevieve for Brunch. A delightful drive through the Hoback and a dip in hot springs for a soak. Dinner at Dornans to watch the sunset. A kayak moonlit float on the Snake River. A trip into the town of Jackson for shopping and to visit the many galleries. Hike around Jenny Lake. Horseback ride for spectacular mountain views.
