We had the good fortune of connecting with Patrick de Leon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Patrick, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
Whether you are an employee or a budding entrepreneur, don’t leave before you need to leave. Don’t let your emotions take you over.
Quitting is a good thing when the time and reasons are right. Most folks hesitate to quit because of fear of losing or the stigma of giving up because our society thinks that all quitters are losers. I beg to disagree.
Remember that there’s also an upside to quitting: the faster you make the right decision to move out, the earlier you can join a new company that fits you well, and one that can truly set you up for success. This is what we call “opportunity cost”. That time and effort WASTED waiting for a miracle to happen could have been used for something else. Quitting therefore isn’t about giving up–it’s about being smarter to take advantage of better opportunities waiting for you.
Quit if you must, and find greener pastures. But before you hand down that resignation letter or close the shop, do note that it is also your responsibility to exhaust all solutions first in the most objective way.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I came from humble beginnings. My parents come from a town in the Philippines, called Pampanga (Far from the world’s famous beaches in Boracay and Palawan) And my mom is a typical Asian tiger mom who wants the best for her kids. As a kid, I was sent to an all-boys catholic, private school which is what locals do in this country if they want to provide their children with the best education there is. Unfortunately, my family couldn’t afford for that and my classmates would end up becoming sons of entrepreneurs and government officials in the Philippines. And the only way for me to enter that school is to find benefactors and to be under a scholarship program. So it was really years and years of being financially and academically pressured to excel throughout my life. It was during these moments of my life when I told myself that I want to get out of this mediocrity. I want to be that guy from the Philippines who can prove to the rest of the world that YOU CAN NEVER BE TOO SMALL TO DREAM BIG.
Whether you’re an employee or an entrepreneur, it pays to go beyond your comfort zone and explore the world outside your small bubble. To become the best of the best, you have to benchmark yourself with global standards too – Strive to gain international experience, sharpen your technology quotient (TQ), and level up your communication skills.
Remember that sometimes, your ceiling is just someone else’s floor. Don’t just look down when you’re at the peak. Look up—you’ll realize that there are mountains taller than yours. So go ahead: stretch yourself, do the thing you’re afraid of, and head west. A word of caution—life is about risks but it always pays well to calculate your risks too.
