We had the good fortune of connecting with Paula Aguila and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Paula, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Involving our clients in our litigation strategy for their case.

In my experience, our fluid and sincere communication with our clients sets us apart from other law firms. I believe that carefully hearing our clients’ stories in their own words as opposed to simply reading documents, lets us appreciate our clients’ nuances and specific circumstances. With that knowledge, we can then craft pre-suit or litigation strategies specific to solving our clients’ needs.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?

I’m the Founding Partner of MPA LAW, a boutique litigation firm handling high-stakes commercial disputes, often with political or international ramifications. We are an all-women law firm, which is a rarity in complex commercial litigation. My partner, Monica Amador, is an experienced trial attorney and a force to be reckoned with in Court. Our junior attorney, Ibonne McClintock, worked as an attorney abroad before becoming an attorney in the U.S, and has become an invaluable asset for our international cases.

What sets us apart from others is the quality of our work. Our clients trust us with their most important business disputes, and we take that very seriously. Starting with listening to our clients carefully to understand the real issues and nuances of their cases, crafting strategies specific to their needs, and acting on those strategies efficiently and aggressively.

Starting MPA LAW was a natural step for me. After 14 years of managing and leading complex litigation matters at the highest levels, I wanted to do it with my own team. I needed to focus on my cases and nothing else. Starting a new firm was a lot of work, but I was used to working a lot and this felt different, so I embraced the challenge and tried to enjoy every step. Now, three years later, I’m extremely proud of my team, the quality of our work, and the huge successes we have accomplished for our clients.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love the outdoors, so I would definitely start the weekend with a Yoga Class at Legion Park in MiMo and then buy one of the many natural juices offered at its Farmer’s Market. Paddleboarding in Biscayne Bay or Hobie Cat sailing in Key Biscayne are also great options for a sunny day.

Art wise there are so many great options, but one of my favorites is the Perez Museum because of its architecture, its outdoor restaurant facing the bay and the amazing park surrounding it. I also like the Viscaya Museum because of its uniqueness in Miami and amazing gardens and water views.

One of my favorite spots to dine is Mandolin, also in MiMo; it has a great outdoor patio with beautiful lanterns at night and amazing Turkish food. I also like Carpaccio in Bal Harbour, they are former clients and great people. And the place I go to at least once a month is Fiorito, a locals’ favorite Argentinean restaurant.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Professionally, Andres Rivero of Rivero Mestre, where I started as a law student and later became a partner, believed in me even before I did. Early on in my career, he trusted me with putting together and managing large teams of lawyers in very big cases, including the Chevron billion-dollar litigation in Ecuador. He also gave me the opportunity to co-lead several complex international cases worth over a hundred million dollars. Having someone of his stature trust me with such important and complex matters gave me invaluable confidence. And, when years later I decided it was time to start my own litigation firm, Andres could not have been a greater supporter.

Personally, my migration to the U.S. from Argentina would not have been possible without my mother’s foresight and constant support. And, later in my career, my husband, Manuel Martinez, gave me great advice about how to navigate a male dominated industry and always encouraged me to go for more.
