We had the good fortune of connecting with Paula Amezquita and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Paula, what is the most important factor behind your success?
A strong foundation of family unity and the genuine passion we all have for exotic plants. Perfect Choice Nursery is a family owned garden center in South Florida that has been around for 20+ years, we specialize in exotic plants, and bringing the plant community together. You can see from our social media that every part of our business has a sprinkle of each of my family’s touch & personality.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve always had a passion for exploring my creative side. From video editing to photography and design, I loved diving into these artistic pursuits. In 2011, I graduated with an associates degree in graphic design, but instead of pursuing it further, I took a different path. I became a flight attendant, worked in attractions and photography at Disney World, and I was even an au pair in Spain. I wanted to see what else was out there. Interestingly, all those varied experiences led me back to something that was right in front of me all along – our family business. I discovered a new way to market our garden center: social media. I brought back the skills and knowledge I’d picked up along the way, infusing them into our family-friendly, authentic branding.
It’s been a journey of self-discovery, taking detours and embracing the unexpected. But in the end, it’s amazing to realize that all those diverse experiences have come together to shape my approach to marketing and creativity.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Fun! I’d kick off my day with a visit to Imperial Moto Cafe for their amazing coffee. Then, I’d explore local markets like Walters Mercado and Little River Flea. Lunchtime might find me at The Standard, followed by grabbing some natural wine from Sobremesa and dessert from Peel Soft-serve. I’d catch a movie at Nite Owl Drive-In and finish with a relaxing night picnic at Museum Park. A day packed with great food, exploration, and relaxation.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would have to shout out the plant community!! The plant community in South Florida is vibrant and dedicated. It’s fascinating how plants can foster a nurturing connection among people. The willingness to share knowledge and even plants themselves speaks volumes about the sense of camaraderie and mutual support within the community. It’s wonderful to be a part of such a positive and collaborative ecosystem.
