We had the good fortune of connecting with Picardo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Picardo, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I identify several key factors that underscore the success of Picardo as a professional artist and the “Picardo Colours” brand. The triumph of Picardo’s fine art lies in its unique ability to transform emotions into vibrant visual experiences, seamlessly blending artistic expression with community impact. This is evident in our diverse ranges, which include murals, wearable art, live painting performances, and a variety of art workshops.

PICARDO Colours transcends a mere brand; it represents a movement that breathes life into art in powerful and unexpected ways. My business emphasizes community involvement through the development and execution of projects aimed at fostering social connections and engagement. These initiatives not only unite people but also encourage meaningful dialogue and interaction.

Through these projects, we provide opportunities for individuals to engage with art beyond traditional academic settings, thereby inspiring future generations of artists and changemakers.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art practice is rooted in the creation of intricate visual mythologies, with each piece woven into a broader tapestry of storytelling. I have been deeply committed to crafting fantastical narratives that resonate emotionally and intellectually with the viewer. This approach allows me to explore themes that are both timeless and deeply connected to my own experiences; I dated this from 1997.
What sets me apart within the vibrant arts community of Miami is this dedication to mythological storytelling, as well as the transformative journey that has shaped my practice. In 1998, I made the pivotal decision to move to the United States, seeking opportunities and support that were unavailable to me in my home country. This transition not only influenced the evolution of my artistic vision but also instilled in me a profound appreciation for resilience and reinvention—values that continue to inform my work.
While the Miami art scene thrives on diversity and innovation, I take pride in contributing a uniquely narrative-driven perspective that intertwines memory, imagination, and cultural reflection.
Navigating the challenges of expressing myself in the English language was a significant hurdle during the early years of my artistic journey in the United States. As someone deeply connected to my Afro-Caribbean roots, I found solace and inspiration in creating a series of works that celebrated the rich tapestry of Caribbean culture and identity. This artistic exploration became a transformative outlet for me, allowing me to share cultural elements infused with nostalgia—a reflection of living in a foreign land with a different language, climate, and lifestyle.
For over a decade, much of my work carried the essence of multicultural ethnicities in the Caribbean, conveying the vibrancy and resilience of its people. As I transitioned into a more solid and mature stage in my career, my artistic focus evolved into a unique combination of abstract figurative pieces paired with my poetry. Bold colors and heavy brushstrokes have become defining characteristics of my creative experimentation, enabling me to craft distinctive works that stand apart within the visual arts community.
An integral part of this journey has been my commitment to educating art enthusiasts about the importance of supporting living artists. I strongly believe that art holds the power to enrich space and lives, making it essential to foster and appreciate contemporary creations. Through my work, I strive to spark conversations about the value of art and the cultural stories it carries, bridging communities and inspiring deeper connections.
Becoming a professional artist was a path marked by immense challenges, both during my time at university and the years that followed. One of the most significant obstacles I faced was the lack of support from my father, who viewed my pursuit of art as merely a hobby rather than a legitimate career. His skepticism fueled my determination, but it also added emotional weight to my journey.
Financial constraints were another major challenge, as I struggled to afford the books and art supplies needed to complete projects each semester. Yet, this limitation became an opportunity for creativity—learning to find and repurpose objects around me ignited a resourcefulness that became integral to my practice. Recycling and repurposing materials not only helped me to overcome adversity but also became a distinctive hallmark of my work that I continue to embrace today.
Overcoming obstacles is never easy, and the frustrations and self-doubt I faced were formidable. These experiences, however, shaped my resilience and led me to become a man of faith with strong self-esteem. Each challenge became a tool for growth, teaching me valuable lessons in both art and life.
Looking back, I am deeply grateful that I remain strong in my commitment to my vision and passion. Today, I stand as a testament to perseverance and purpose, proud of the artist and person I have become.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I put together a fun and relaxed Miami itinerary for a couple of friends who came to visit us from West Michigan two months ago. It was a perfect mix of tropical vibes, great food, art, and a little Miami flair. We’ll explore some of my favorite spots, from lush gardens and waterfront restaurants to rooftop cocktails and vibrant museums.
Since they were coming from chilly West Michigan, expect sunny days, ocean breezes, and plenty of opportunities to soak up that Miami energy — without getting stuck in the usual tourist traps. You’ll get to experience some hidden gems, enjoy amazing Caribbean and Latin-inspired food, and still have time to kick back with drinks and good company.
