We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachael Avara and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rachael, how do you think about risk?
The biggest rewards in life do not come without taking risks.
In 2019, I left a prominent role as Lead Event Producer for a luxury creative firm in my hometown of Baltimore, MD to pursue a role as a Stewardess working onboard super yachts.
I had spent the past 6 years building a successful career within the events industry, but I knew it was time for a change. So, I said goodbye to my family and friends, packed my entire life into a 10×10 storage unit and I moved to South Florida, where I had landed my first position onboard a 45 meter super yacht. I spent the next 3 years traveling the world, from Turkey to the Caribbean and everywhere in between, working with high profile clients, politicians and global brands. Those years spent in yachting really helped me to hone my skills within the luxury market. The industry also led me to meeting my now husband, Malachi – which I am most grateful for.
Coming full circle – In March of 2021 I launched my own company, ROAM Events. We are a luxury, boutique event planning and design firm based here in South Florida. We specialize in providing our clients with the highest standard of service when it comes to planning and designing life’s momentous occasions. Had I never left Baltimore and taken the risk of following my hopes and dreams, my path would have led me in a different direction and I am so grateful for taking that leap of faith only a few short years ago. Follow your dreams, set realistic goals for yourself and the opportunities are endless.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think what sets ROAM apart from other planning and design firms is that we specialize within the luxury market. We go above and beyond – taking the extra steps to ensure that our clients have a first class experience working alongside our team. We take a limited number of weddings and events each year to ensure that every client is provided with the utmost level of detail, and a uniquely and cohesively designed event every time.
I have been in the wedding and events industry for about a decade now, nothing comes easily in this industry. Some lessons are learned the hard way and many lessons are learned with time and experience. I got my foot in the door by doing a 10 month unpaid internship before landing my first Event Producer role. Many people think that what we do as creatives as being “fun and easy”. Our roles are not only to be the planners, but to be a liaison for the families and to produce and execute some of the momentous events in our clients lives. That’s a big role to take on.
My biggest take away has been that relationships are key. When a client or fellow vendor speaks about myself or a member of my team, I want them to remember our team as being kind, gracious and honest – I think we do that well!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
While we service all of South Florida and beyond, I have so much love in particular for our city of Fort Lauderdale. Sure, we have beautiful beaches, impressive homes and super yachts all around, but the people and the culture of this city is something special.
We have some great new spots popping up around the city and as a self proclaimed “foodie” (I’m the wife of a professional chef) I love the up and coming food scene here. Some of my newest favorites include, Holly Blue, DUNE by Laurent Tourondel, Takato and our newest addition, Evelyns at the new Four Seasons Fort Lauderdale Beach.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to dedicate this shoutout to my husband, Malachi Child – he encouraged me to open my company, ROAM. He is my constant foundation and driving force, always pushing me to follow my dreams and to think BIG.
