We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachel Bohbot and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rachel, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I’ve always prided myself on having a very healthy work life balance. I take the necessary steps to make sure of this (such as having a designated work space at home so that I don’t mess with the balance of the house). Unfortunately, in the past few months, I’ve found that work was consuming my life. I believe in working hard, but when it comes at the expense of happiness and quality time with loved ones, one has to take a step back and reevaluate the situation. I was accepting more orders than I could physically handle, and that took time out of my sleep, personal time, and health. After noticing the physical and mental exhaustion, I knew I had to restore my work life balance. I successfully limited my availability and started properly valuing my time. I learned a very useful lesson and I intend on maintaining this balance throughout my career!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
When I was younger, I would express myself through art and dance. Now, my artistic release is in the form of beautiful desserts!
My work is unique to my style and brand. I collect inspiration from all over, but I put my own personal touch in everything I do. It’s very rewarding when I have creative freedom over an order because the client trusts what I will come up with.
Getting to this point was not that simple. The start was slow. Putting myself out there was the hardest part. I was worried about what people would think, and if I would fail. I started The Atlantic Cookie as a hobby, but it slowly transitioned into a small business. People gained trust in my brand and in my capabilities.
Ive learned that no matter how small the business is, one must invest time and resources. With consistency and vision, it will grow!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When I have guests visiting town, the first place I make sure to take them is to Bayside. The market, the live music, and the views make for the perfect day. I also make sure to squeeze in as many brunch days. Following brunch, I’d either take them to the Wharf or Wynwood. Roof top bars are my favorite spots for happy hours or just a night out. Additionally, South beach is a must, whether it is day or night.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate every ounce of my success to my sister, Shani. From creating my logo, to bringing the design vision to almost all of my orders, she has helped me bring this brand to life. She’s stayed up till 2am with me as I finish decorating a cake, and she does it with love. The Atlantic Cookie would not be here if it wasn’t for her support and assistance.
