We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachel Delphonse and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rachel, what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?
Needing to go to school to be taken seriously. Don’t get me wrong, some careers do require education to maximize your value, but creative things such as art, culinary, music, whatever, your best teacher is real world experience. I think as a creative, you are doing yourself an injustice by allowing someone to tell you how to do YOU! If you really want to follow your dreams, connect with like-minded people who will inspire you to be the best version of you! THAT is worth more than any piece of paper a university can give you.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I like that you referred to my work as art. I have recently come to that realization that what i do is really art. To be able to take an inanimate object such as a picture or idea and make it not only tangible, but edible, is the coolest thing anyone can do! I say that as humbly as possible.

When I started my business, there were not many custom bakeries and even less home bakeries. So at the time, I was 1 of very few decorators in my city. fast forward to 2021, its so easy to find someone to make a custom cake, but my customers from the beginning continue to come back every chance they get! So, to answer your question, I am proud that Rachel’s Sweets Co. has been doing great, despite all the competition.

I work very hard to remain consistently available for everyone that comes to me to order a dessert. I would like to think that my bakery has continued to grow because I am big on customer service and gratitude and shows. I try to build a relationship with everyone who orders and if there is a problem, I do my best to make it right. I’m thankful for everyone who supports my brand and i make it my mission to let everyone know.

I want Rachel’s Sweets to set the tone of how every home business/ small shop interacts with customers. Interact with your clients and show them that you are here to help them bring the vision to life. We are all here for the purpose of wanting to create and get paid to do what we love, but regardless of what you do for a living, a little sugar goes a long way (pun intended!)

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’ll be honest, I’ve become a hermit crab, especially since the pandemic. (laughing). If anything, I would spend time outside of Broward county and take them straight to the Keys! We would spend most of our day on a boat! check the historical museums and eat tons of sea food from DJ Clam Shack. Check out my favorite Cuban spot Kim Kuban and end the whole trip with a ferry ride to a private island where we can watch the sunset while and enjoy a 5 star dinner at Latitude!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My friends and family are my biggest cheerleaders! My support system keeps me grounded and focused. My husband reminds me everyday that the sky is the limit. My children influence me to not quit, because I know they are watching. My siblings for always sharing, support me, and lending a helping hand whenever i need them. My mom for allowing me to be myself (even if it doesn’t make sense.) My friends for rooting for me from day one! And of course, i cant forget my amazing clients/Dessert family! They are tremendously loyal and keep me eager to grow!
