We had the good fortune of connecting with Rayanna Burse and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rayanna, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
I know it’s cliche to say but not giving up really helped my success. On days when I didn’t feel inspired or being creative I would look at my old photos. I would find different techniques or shooting styles to try to bring the spark back, and it worked. On days where I didn’t always know how I wanted to shoot or do something I would just wing it. I never gave up on keeping my creative flow, and found new ways to challenge myself.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Outside of doing photography, I also have a body waxing business called Wax The Box. Learning how to navigate through running two separate businesses has been a challenge. When you start working for yourself, you literally work 24/7. Being the foundation of your business will teach you strength, endurance, time management, and so much more about life. When people ask me what I do for a living, I tell them whatever I want! I can proudly say that now because I’ve built a solid foundation for myself to be able to work and not have to overwhelm myself. I want people to see my art and brands and know that it didn’t happen overnight but it’s genuine and I worked hard for it. I didn’t start any of it for the money but to help people and provide a positive experience.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m not the friend who’s a big foodie. I like to cook at home and try different recipes or bake. When I do go out I like to try the places with the best wings and drinks. We’d probably cook breakfast at home (depending on what time we wake up) or find a quick breakfast place. We are always on the go, so I think we’d have fun just picking different places together and trying them out. All my friends know I love the beach, so we will definitely spend some time there. We’d probably find a nice hookah lounge for a calm night cap. During the day we’d be out looking at popular photoshoot locations and taking pictures.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
These people have been some of the best teachers and supporters that I could ask for. Always willing to offer help or just let me tag along on some of their jobs so I can learn. Outside of my friends and family, I would like to shout out these super humans for helping me along my journey. Ishell Vaughan, Leef Parks, NotCommon, Mdot, Big Flix, PictureThatNJ, Mike “KeefyyyCarter”, Rico10stacks and Alissa Solomon.
