We had the good fortune of connecting with Rebecca Gosik and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rebecca, what’s your definition for success?
Success looks different for everyone. I don’t believe it’s money that makes you successful, it’s living life the way you want to and having the time freedom or financial freedom to do so. Some people feel they need wealth to be successful, but its really all a matter of opinion. If you are happy and genuinely content with your life then who can say that’s not successful?
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I come from a Pennsylvania middle-class family and didn’t attend college so I felt odds were already against me being anything than a typical 9 to 5 employee. But I love challenges and don’t like others defining what is expected of me. So, many years ago I developed a dog juice called Pet Plenish and tried to bring it to market without any experience or knowledge of the process. Needless to say it failed and needed to move on to other projects. I accept failure as a part of the journey to success but I can’t afford to repeat it. Fast forward a few years and many ideas later, I started investing in real estate. As excited as I am about that area of my life, I am most excited about the recent app I developed because it is so helpful to so many people. As a newbie to South Florida I saw a need in the market for a common place to list happy hour, live entertainment & special event data. I developed Barstool Social selfishly but it has been a very handy tool for anyone in the Fort Lauderdale area planning on a brunch, night out or hosting visitors. I have always loved to help people and Barstool Social is my way of being able to do that!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I always show off Elbo Room for the friendly bartenders, live entertainment and people watching. A couple of my favorite afternoon happy hours are Salt7 and TacoCraft. I always try to grab burgers at American Social and shrimp at Southport Raw Bar and I love grabbing coffee at Ann’s Florist & Coffee Bar. Its very entertaining to do the Jungle Queen with visitors and The Hub Spark or Fat Cats are fun late night spots depending if I can last that long! There’s too many good places to fit into a week long trip!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I believe I was born with an entrepreneur mindset but it has been heavily influenced by my father as well as an old boss who I spent 15 years working for. My mother has been one of my biggest supporters after diving into entrepreneurship and it would’ve been a more difficult journey without that. But professionally I love to follow Tony Robbins, Dean Graziosi & Gary Vaynerchuk for various encouragement. Some of my favorite books I have read are ‘Rich Dad Poor Dad’ by Robert Kiyosaki, ‘How To Win Friends & Influence People’ by Dale Carnegie and ‘Tools of Titans’ by Tim Ferris. There are so many people that deserve some credit for anything that I accomplish.
